  • i am not getting any help on this....

    so, i post here even though it's not related with RR..

    Recently my carpc takes like 20 to 30 sec to shutdown... i googled and tried a few suggestions but none of them resolved my problem... Any of you guys have had this problem before and have some suggestions for me that worked for you?

    Thanks...

    Try unplugging all USB devices then test the shutdown speed...

    If it changes for better: likely some usb driver/software is your problem -- in this case, plug one by one USB device and shutdown in between each device you plug ... time each shutdown and see what the cost (in time) of each device is.

    If you see no changes: You likely have some service running that is taking some time to shutdown... you can try disabling any services you don't need and/or opening device manager and disable any device you don't use. There's also a registry setting to set how long a service/application has (in seconds) to terminate after a shutdown request -- reducing this amount can help a lot in some cases.

      I'll post in a forum about hamburgers, even though my question is about hot dogs because it's been a whole day and none of the hot dog people have responded!
      Do you have any idea how mind-bogglingly ludicrous this sounds?

      There's a whole bloody forum devoted to OS optimization that has a wealth of suggestions for speeding up startup and shutdown times.
      But NOOOOOO.
      You believe you know what will get you the best and fastest response, so you post in the RoadRunner forum. Un-freakin-believable.

      Aside from your gross ignorance of what is appropriate and what is not, you also provided no information to even begin to assist in speeding up the shutdown time.
      It would help to know your OS, your system specs, what hardware devices you have connected, are you doing a full shutdown or hibernate, and so on.

      On an unrelated note... Why is the shutdown time a huge deal? 30 seconds is not particularly slow for a full shutdown.

      Guino offered a couple of good suggestions, and it's certainly a good place to begin, anyway.

        Thread moved to OS optimization. Don't post off topic, please.

          I am in total agreement with Pervert on this one,
          How can you expect to get a good answer to question if you cant wait for it. Wow the nerve of some peoples kids these days. What are parents teaching there kids these days anyway. Did you listen to them when they said go to school. If you did you would have a better understanding of life in the real world. Yes I said it, the real world (mp3car.com).
          I am pretty offended by the fact that some one has the nerve to post in this forum with an unrelated topic when forum guidlines are clearly spelled out in black and white. If you can read them please do. If you cant, no wonder you couldnt find your answer to the question. In fact I want to know who is typing for you. I know you didnt do that for yourself.
          I would start saying your hail mary's now because you definitely have a long path to travel before you get to heaven buddy. Unbelievable. My blood is really boiling at the ignorance bestowed upon the community of these forums. Seems like if we wanted to hear such a stupid question we may ask you to ask it. If you are not asked to ask a question please keep it to yourself.
          Never again do I hope or want to see such a display of lack of discipline in this forum again. To save my self from over exposure to human dumbness I will have to limit myself from the forums for a while, while I recover from the exposure I have allready suffered.

                The rest of the community doesn't deserve to be bombarded with crossposts, especially in forums unrelated to the topic at hand.

                If you want to break it down, what you did violates the rules of these forums.
                It's generally considered poor forum etiquette in general.
                It also makes you appear so self-absorbed that you feel your issue is the most important thing that this community needs to address by crossposting the same question within 24 hours of one another. We're not here to adhere to your time schedule. Sorry if that inconveniences you, but its fact.
                Lastly, it dilutes the RR forum (in this specific instance) with unrelated information. As helpful as that information might be, it is, as they say, off-topic, which makes it that much more difficult for other users trying to find information about a given subject.

                I'm the first one to admit that I was harsh in my response. If that set you off, then I'm sorry. However, you're also going to remember this the next time you consider posting inappropriately.

                And please don't question my happiness or overall mental/emotional health. You don't know me from Adam's cat. As such, you have no idea about me or my mental state.
                Not that it's any of your business, my attitude is just fine, thank you very much.

                My bluntness is off-putting to some, and I realize that. If you have a hard time with someone telling you exactly how it is without prettying up anything, then that's your problem to deal with.

                And the only think that makes me at all clown-like is my ability to juggle, which is half-arsed at best.

                  ok, i got it. Sorry about what i did. What i did was not appropriate, I am not gonna make any excuse.. As it was stated, i couldn't/didn't get any help from anywhere. And believe me, i did all i could. i ended up forcing myself turn the power off every time when window is still in shutting down mode from RR.. That's not wise at all, at least that i know. I thought this type of window behavior likely to occur to carpc than desktop cuz of extra hardware you deal with that you don't with your desktop, just wasn't sure about it. I did what i did from desperation in hoping some of you smart soft/hardware engineer or those with carpc with this experience could give me some direction. I like people in RR forum. Many of them are very smart and friendly. Thought that would be my last option even though it may not be RR related.... Thanks to guino for some tips. I understand what i did was wrong, but i don't deserve harsh wordings or strong comments cuz you don't know me either. I am no criminal nor had been raised wrongly by my parents.. I don't need to be lectured like i am a trouble maker or lunatic. On top of all that, i don't think my question was totally out of line to be honest.

                  well... don't wanna make this big deal.. i got your point and also i might have possible solution. Thanks to Guino again for that... Let's just all be happy..

                        Maybe some services optimization might be in order?
                        Have you checked your event logs? I'm sure you'll find something not right logging as an error or warning...

                          XP I am guessing?

                          Well a 900Mhz machine isnt going to blow shutdown times out of the water to begin with. Only thing I can see is bluetooth that could be causing a problem. Bluetooth in general is processor intensive with a bad stack and when connected to a device, it needs to disconnect before shutdown. uninstall bluetooth and see if it helps. But honestly, 30 seconds on a 900mhz celeron isnt bad at all.

                            try this registry edit.
                            values in milliseconds. Set the WaitToKill options to smaller values if you like.

                            [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
                            "ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000
                            "HungAppTimeout"="4000"
                            "MenuShowDelay"="200"
                            "WaitToKillAppTimeout"="5000"

                            [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
                            "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="5000"

                              thanks for the tips guys... just about tried everthing you've suggested... Didn't help a bit.. uninstalled blutooth... tweak the registry... Followed 100 steps to optimize xp... etc.... Non helped... By the way, i misinformed you about 30 sec. shutdown time.. it's 1min 30 sec... I am about to do a fresh reinstall of XP, and go from there.. Maybe 1min 30sec is normal for 900ghz system?
