  • Front ends for Win98SE?

    Hey.

I recently installed Win98SE on my car PC after long and frustrating ventures with Fedora Core 4 and Windows XP. It actually happens to be good for me as it boots and shuts down in no time at all.

Anyways, me real question is, what sort of front end apps are there out there that will behave on 98SE?
1994 ED Ford Falcon GLi Classic
Hardware: Acer Travelmate 3200, Car Charger, Lilliput 7"
Software: Roadrunner (Simplistique), WinXP Pro, ShutControl

Most of the frontends available here may work, but they expect to find WMP9 or higher amongst other funny things, usually not available in a default win98se install. Not that these things are really usefull, but most of them were developped on a winxp/2k machine, and their authors tend to forget win98se is a real 32bit system ( just my rant , I know what can't be done on win98se, don't aim me with a flame thrower, I've mine ready, muhahahaha. lol ).

Besides, the real problem with win98se are GPS-routing apps. Some work just fine with Win98SE, but the most intersting ones don't. (insert my previous rant here too, upgrade it to "Rant Mk II" cuz' these apps aren't free.... Curse y'all, lazzy coders... bleh )

Currently I use mapstore (europe only) for GPS, and my own frontend, written in delphi on a win98se machine, only using WMP 6.4.07.112. for audio and videocapx for Rearcam and divx playback.
Now Galileo is real. Muhahahahaha :p

            Roadrunner _should_ work.

RRConfig doesn't work so you have to make the rr.ini manually.

I have one machine running Roadrunner and another SE that won't. Guino is trying to look into the issue now.

I've also used iGuidance on SE.

I'm not knocking anything that anyone is doing but what in the F is the reason to install 98? if anything, install a minimal version of xp.

98 has many more problems than xp and they will annoy you much quicker. then, after seeing these problems, you have to go back and install xp anyway.

I guess if you're an idiot and can't setup 98 properly. Why exactly is there so much hate on this board for 98 in someone else's car? Answer his question.

I have three carpc's - 98se, xp pro, tinyxp. All three fit their application.

My reason is that it boots in 17 seconds from cold, is a 23Mb zip file on my boot drive, is less than 48Mb in the ramdrive after being unzipped and booted, and does everything I need.

The reasons to use it make sense. I was simply looking at it from a stability (and support) standpoint.

                        Use this to make a 98micro install : http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html
Then trim out other stuff that isn't needed (fonts, cursors, sounds, etc).
                        Then trim out unneeded DLLs.
Then read this and zip it up : http://www.lachiesadicristo.it/w98cd/page1.htm

I wrote a how to on another carpc site, but the forums rules prohibit me from posting a link.
