  • Low Spec Mobo and Proccessor - Speed Up?

    Dear all,

With all this talk about small footprint and stuffs. I'm wondering if I were to use those TinyXP/Beast... even 98?! to cure the slow bootup and lag issue when I'm watching DVD/AVI/DIVx files?

I'm planning to use PCChips M789 with the VIA C3 800mhz processor.

    Any suggestion is welcome.

Another thing, I'm wondering if anybody here have experience using this mobo? Is it overclockable? Maybe to 1Ghz or so by manipulating it in the BIOs?

    Thanks!

I have this piece of crap board I bought off of newegg like 2 or 3 years ago. They still sell it for like $50 too. Unbelievable. I bought it for a MythTV box, but no go because it sucks sooooooo much.

I use it as a server, because that is about all it can do.

The C3 processor it has the previous generation before the M10k and such. It is not the same chip but slower. It is much much slower! It runs slower than my old 400Mhz Celeron.

Video is choppy. With a nLited XP, it is bearable to watch movies on, and sound is ok. I would not put this in your car.

Yes it is overclockable in theory, but if you do, it dies. Never to return again unless you clear the CMOS.

I use a VIA board in my car, the M10k, and I love it. But this C3 "Samuel" 800Mhz is poop.

Make a server out of it.

What do you wxpect for under $50 for both mobo and cpu!

Yes it is bad. I have only tried Knoppix (linux) and XP (Pro, Home, nLite) and both have been choppy for video playback with 512Mb of RAM. You could try 95 or 98, or 2k, but I doubt it will work well either. A PCI video card will help a little but, but not too much. It has no AGP or PCIx slots, so you are stuck with a PCI video card (and when was the last time they made those?!?!)

I've been using that board for a while now. So long as you are only doing GPS & Audio it works fantastic. I have put on XP successfully and it runs fine. Though, to be honest, I wouldn't push it any harder than that (i.e. video).
