  • help uninstalling video codecs

somewhere I downloaded a ****load of video codecs. Probably most packages you can imagine. (Divx, directx, ffdshow, Ac3filters, Alc media player, among MANY others) I was trying to get the video and the audio to match up properly, but nothing worked. Now nothing works..lol.. I tried using wmp and only hear audio. I can't even play those "sample" videos that come with the player. So I deleted as much **** as I could and went back and re-installed directx and ffdshow. Now only the vlc media player will play with audio and video, but they are not even close to being matched up. The other players don't work (WMP, winamp, realplayer, etc.) I've become so overwhelmed and do not understand this whole codec thing. How can I delete all of the bull**** codecs I installed and re-install one package that will work for me? I really can't go about re-installing xp right now. thanx!!

I don't mean to insult you, but: Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs

Hopefully you didn't delete the uninstall files.

      If that doesn't work:
Step 1: Open Control Panel and double click the System icon.

Step 2: Select the Hardware and click the Device Manager Button.

Step 3. Expand the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" list. Double click either the Audio Codecs or the Video Codecs item to see a list of installed codec.

Step 4: Select any of the codecs and either remove that codec from the system or disable it.

      If that doesn't work:
      Codec Sniper

Has this ever been solved? Is there a way to completely remove audio codecs and set everything back to default without having to reformat the computer?

Try codec Sniper. Its a chance but trust me your iguidance will not have sound until you reformat. Happen to me before and I spend days messing with it with no result so i just format the sucker. It might be a good start also if you want to change out operation system. I been messing with alot of version of WINDOWS XP and so far i found 2 version that is very fast and reliable.

Also try to check on the speech output. That is one of the main problem. See if you computer is still speaking back to you. Turn on speech recognition and see it it respond to whatever u click or type.

              sup tn,
thanks for all the replies, dude. i'll give codec sniper a shot. i would reformat but like i said in the other thread, i don't have the means to mess with the pc indoors right now. it would suck if i have to sit in the car to reformat and config all the other apps all over again.

which version of XP did you like? just in case i need to reformat. and how do you use speech recognition?

try the xwife edition =) very fast. Taking out the carpc isn't that bad. Me I unplug a couple of wires and I am good to go. Not much configing for me. I have everything set on the system with a backup i made. Just install and go. maybe about 15 to 20 minutes setting up software that about it.

Either CCCP or Klite seems to be the best codec pack. I installed Klite a couple years ago and it was having all sorts of problems, but I suppose its possible that they have made some heavy improvements since then. I still prefer CCCP, it gives you exactly what you need to play all the more popular video formats, and include two great media players. Media player classic integrates well with some CarPC frontends, and Zoomplayer is my favorite desktop media player. They should give you good instructions to get all the popular formats working in their Wiki.

after you get it fixed, i highly recomend CCCP for all your codec needs.
you will only be missing quicktime and realmedia but you can get those with quicktime alternative and realmedia alternative.

simply deleting a codecs without unregistering it first from the system can be problematic.

I recomend a reformat as well if it gets really bad. It will save you lots of time you could be spending doing more fun stuff.
