  • S3 vs. S4

What is the real difference in power consumption on these two modes? I have my MCE box at home running in S3 and it completely shuts down and starts up within 5-10 seconds. Will this mode work with a CarPC without draining the battery in the process?

    Thanks

It all depends on teh PC hardware.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

Like what? Will some chips stay running during S3 while others won't?

My computer in the car stays on pernamently, when the key is turned off the computer goes to s3 standby, drawing about 150mA. originally i had the power disconnect from the laptop, and it then run from the internal battery while on standby, lasting about 50 hours. but now i just have the laptop power supply turned on pernamently to the car battery because 150ma is nothing for the car battery.

I've been too afraid to try it - don't want my battery to die. Maybe I will try it now...hmm

Edit: Well, I guess I forgot about all the features on my M2-ATX, it will shut it down completely if the battery level is too low, so I guess I'll give this a shot

Ok, maybe I'm missing something, but I can't get my car pc to go into S3, just S4. My BIOS is set to S3 and I did the reg fix for USB in Windows, so I don't know what else I have to do. I have a VIA M10000 mboard...

are you picking standby when you "shutdown" windows?

I was reading other people's experiences on Annoyances.org and it hit me that I have mine forcing hibernation in Windows - DUH! I am going to try unchecking hibernation and make sure that Windows is set for standby on power off. I remember doing this before and it not working though, I maybe have to make sure my USB devices aren't enabled for wake...

                Thanks

I'm not sure how accurate these tests are, but this guy says that S3 takes just as much power as when the computer is shut off.
