  • **Bootup Problems!!**

I'm hoping you guys can help me out on this one.

I have a M10000 Mobo, 512 ram, 120WD harddrive, running on XP. Power supply is M2-ATX. The supply is wired to my 1farad capacitor which is obviously then connected to the battery. Computer starts fine this way. BUT:

Starting yesterday, when I turn the ignition on, the computer turns on but Windows will not bootup. It just goes to the system configuration screen basically listing out what all is on the system. Looks to be all the hardware. I have to manually unplug the PSU from the mobo to turn it off because since it didn't bootup, it won't shutdown and therefore stays powered up even witht the key out.

I have tried rebooting like 4 or 5 times, but it still does the same thing. Funny thing is, though, that every 5th or 6th bootup will work fine. Sometimes it will say, " sorry for the inconvinience but windows did not start properly, what would you like to do?" And then i select "Start windows normally."

I definitely don't want to go through this everytime I start my car, so what should I do?

    Any ideas? Thanks

Do you have an external DVD drive connected via a USB cable? If so, that is your problem. If you disconnect the USB cable it will consistenly boot properly.

Yes I do, so how do I correct this? Or am I gonna have to connect the drive only when I use it and after bootup?

Oh and thanks for the help...im glad it's such an easy fix

        Customtl,

You can verify the problem. Boot the PC. When it stops after counting memory and just sits there....unplug the USB cable from the DVD drive. If the boot process breaks loose and starts to continue to run as normal, you'll know you had the same problem that I had.

My external DVD enclosure had both a USB port and a firewire port. I was never able to solve the USB problem. Nothing in the BIOS had any effect. Changing USB drivers did nothing. I eventually bought a firewire cable and used it instead instead of the USB cable and that solved my problem.

Oh nice...sounds good...although I don't have a firewire port, but I have plugged the drive in after bootup and it still worked (the drive, cuz some things via usb or ps2 slots have to be plugged in before bootup). So thats no biggie...most everything is on my harddrive anyways and the usb is plugged into a remote hub that is easily accessible.

Again, I really appreciate your help.

            Ryan,

Glad to help. I found my drive didn't always work after I plugged it in when the PC had finished booting. I had really bad experiences all the way around with USB and a DVD drive.

I think the problem is these mini-ATX motherboards aren't quite as stable in some areas as the full-size motherboards.

this may sound weird, put try plugging it into a different usb port. On my comp, if you have the iPod cable plugged into a certain port, windows wont boot, but if you plug it onto the other port, it does... Go figure.

Just disable "boot from other devices" under advanced bios feature in the bios. And set first boot to HDD-0, and disable for the rest. I think this will solve the problem.

Ah. Sadly that option isn't in my BIOS. However, hooking the usb device up through a pcmcia card I had lying around that had two usb ports on it fixed the problem.

                            Hi all,

I also have some problems with my USB Stuff. I have an (Ebay) slimline DVD enclosure for USB. In that i placed a LiteOn SLW-831S Slot-In drive. Most of the time the bios says there ineed is a DVD drive attached, but when it loads Windows, then it won`t initialize correctly. The drive keeps on making sounds and it`s not displayed in My Computer.

This even doesn`t work directly without any hubs or extension cables. When my hub (D-Link DUB-H7) is connected via my Sitecom Active USB Cable, then nothing works normally.

DaveB: What kind of Enclosure have you bought? Any pics?

TN6478: I also have a Commell LV-677, what kind of external hardware you use?
                            If you`re not first, you`re last !
