  • What else do I need?

I have installed Freedrive and Destinator and get 'not Win32 app' errors.

Am I missing something? Does this still need the Destinator SDK Dll that expires in August?

Also, where do I put the maps?

I'd really appreciate a 'heads-up' on how to get this working. SatNav is the last item I need for a fully functioning Carputer.

    Thank you in anticipation.

Hi.. if you just download freedrive it should at least start up on its own, you only need to maps from the D3 cd to complete the install.. If you have a virgin install of xp, all you should need to do is install FD and then install the maps from you D3 disc.. can you give me some more info please.. also you might of downloaded the version that came with a incorrect settings.ini in the folder, this stopped FD from starting with a Run-time error path not found.. This and a couple of other fixs have been sorted so I would suggest downloading again.. if this isnt the error your getting then can you please give me more detail on that.. we will get you sorted :-)

      Thanks for the quick reply.

The version I have is FD 0.60.FULL. Is this the one?

So, I don't need Destinator at all. Is that right?

Where do I need to put the maps?

FD does start up on its own with Johnsons Hose E2!

Once I get the maps in I'll feedback any errors.

      Thanks.

ok.. long as FD starts up then you need to look in C:\DestinatorApps\Destinator here you will find a folder called London. This holds the map 'london' so just copy the folder from your D3 Original disc over to this directory.. not london, one of its own.. then inside it make sure nothings zipped up, just follow the way the london folder is set up.

I have attached how my uk one is set up so you can see.. once you have copied the map over from your original disc, then start up freedrive and swap maps.. (tap screen, click next.. )

let me know how you get on

        Cheers

          Awesome!

          My UK map works great.

Now, can you recommend a GPS reciever to use with it?

I've got a Clip-On BT one but I'd rather use Serial or USB.

You guys have done a great job.

Once I get mobile with this I'll donate you some beers.

I would recommend a serial gps over a usb one, due to the way usb works.. but saying this most peeps I have met run a usb one and have no issues with them. As long as its NMEA compatable then you should be fine

            :-)

              CDR,

              Does FreeDrive also allow SIRF?

I have not tried it, I'm just being lazy and ask the question here, sorry!

Just following up mindracing's question...been looking for an alternative to Destinator 3 after reading the horror stories regarding the DLL expiring in August. I read on your website that FD requires the Destinator 3.1 SDK and DLL. Is this the same DLL that expires in August?

Sorry if this has been answered before...had a search and couldn't find anything definitive on this...

yes FreeDrive is based around Destinator, just like map moneky is.

                    cheers

Ok....thanks for clearing that up. Asked because I saw a post on Digital-Car saying that FreeDrive didn't need the SDK or DLL.

No disrespect intended towards you mate, but this dll issue almost makes using Destinator 3 pointless. I was really looking forward to using FreeDrive as I think it looks the biz, but if D3 is going to pack up after 'x' months, then what's the point? There isn't really a viable alternative to D3 as most of the other apps are not very touchscreen friendly.

The main reason I started my CarPC project was the GPS functionality...

Really hope these comedians at Destinator get this sorted out soon so we can all use your frontend!!

Yep.....I downloaded FreeDrive a couple of nights ago....like it a lot. I don't have any D3 maps or a GPS receiver yet. Still at the planning stage of my CarPC system and looking at front ends. Was all set to write my own stuff, but decided not to as there is some great stuff already out there!

Just wanted clarification on the D3 issue as I had read that FreeDrive got round the expiring dll problem.

                          Cheers m8y!

the D3 issue isnt going to be all that of a problem I think...

                            - powerloc has advertised destinator as a solution for PC/PPC... so if they dont give us a solution a bunch of people will be ****ed at this and claim false advertising...
                            - many have done some tests and havent been able to get the dll to expire...
                            - powerloc has stated that it wants to work with developers to license the DLL bundled with applications.

So especially since there isnt a better alternative, chill out and use freedrive!

Any ideas for putting a PC in this? :)
