Have a cell phone wired to the car pc such that a first attempt to call it turns the car pc on (from hibernate) and then SMS messages can be sent to trigger actions (such as starting the engine in order to warm the car on cold days!).

Definitely. Since the title of that about using a cell phone to toggle the door locks I didn't look at it. It doesn't really have anything very enlightening in there - and nothing, that I could see, related to how your could get your car pc to turn on by cell phone.

Really? And you didn't see this link? Basically, if you can trigger door locks then you should easily trigger your carpc to power up.

I should have been more clear. That hardware solution doesn't meet my needs since the phone needs to be plugged into the PC and I want the PC to get the SMS text. I believe that part's doable entirely in software (why add hardware if the PC hardware is capable of doing the same job). Although I haven't yet worked out what software will receive SMS on the PC.

The tricky part that I haven't got a clue about is getting a first ring/SMS to turn on the PC if it's hibernated.

The only way to achive this is to use an external piece of hardware cause you don't have any "ports" on you mobile which can be switsched via software.

For other things (once the OC is running) you can easily use the Remote Control Interface of PhoCo and parse SMS custom messages.

If I switched to a serial cable instead of a USB one, would there be any detectable activity when the phone started ringing?

If your computer is set to wake up on serial port Comptuers can do wake on LAN or wake on keyboard.

The serial port has a pin (#9 on a 9pin D-SUB) called RI (Ring Indicator). This one's pulled on an incoming call. Check whether your serail cable controls this signal.

I'm thinking small circuit to detect changes on pin 9 and turn on the power circuit, then the PC. Even in hibernate my setup appears to use about 80mA. I'm not sure why. If I can solve that maybe I can configure the machine to wake on modem and avoid all hardware. Shame I just bought a USB cable after struggling to track down USB instead of serial!

Definitely time to try out PhoCo and see what it can do.

http://www.serasidis.gr/circuits/sms...controller.htm and replicate the cable so the computer would also get the message.
