  • Getting a v551 to work

I know a few people have done this phone, but I can't get mine going.

Here's what happens: I installed the patched Widcomm files and drivers. The Bluetooth can connect to my phone if I select it as a handsfree device on the phone.
I have also edited the settings in Phoco to match those of other users that have gotten this phone to work (Thanks LostReception!).
When I open Phoco it goes into the splash screen and goes through the initializing modes. When it gets to "Resetting Phone" it stays there for a few seconds then flashes "Initializing Phone", then back to "Resetting Phone" and loops like that without moving on. The program will load behind the splash screen and if I click on it the splash screen goes away, but the program is slow to respond and seems like its still doing the "resetting" process in the background.

If anyone has advice on this to get it running let me know.
Zorro, I know you don't trying to support phones that aren't on the list for people that have not bought the program, but I promise you that the second I get this to work I will be buying the program!! Plus, it opens up a whole group of people with this phone to become your customer.

    Cheers.

LostReception sent me the settings that you sent him. I put those in already.
Maybe a quick guide on what I should do to start it up (ie: do you select the CarPC as a "handsfree" on the cell phone to get the BT connected, or is there another way to have it connected? Are there any Widcomm settings I need changed?)
        Thanks for the help.

Is your phone responding at all whenever you open PhoCo?

You should not connect the computer to the phone using any BT service to have PhoCo work. As soon as you start PhoCo, it will automatically attempt to connect to the phone via the Bluetooth Serial Port service. If the connection is successful, you'll see that the phone's display will light up and the BT indicator will come on.

I suggest you delete your PhoCo config file and create a fresh one. You can see what com port the BT serial port is on, by looking at the BT device configuration applet or you can try all of the com ports starting with 1. Work your way up until you find the one that the BT serial port is on. When changing the com ports, edit this entry directly in the config xml file.

Hey man, when you get this working, please post any and all information you get in making it happen. I have a v551 and am planning phoneco shortly. I have put off buying phoneco and getting it all up and running because I dont have time to deal with the hassle if it doesn't work.

My problem is that I haven't had any problems since I figured out the steps I took when I got my phone working 100% with PhoCo. I've tried 3 different computers and all work fine.

I'll install everything from scratch (no BT drivers, apps or PhoCo) on my laptop and make notes of everything I do.

Guide to using PhoCo with v551

Some of these steps may seem inane, but some things are easily overlooked.

                I. Install the BT drivers and software that came with your BT adapter.

II. Pair your phone with the BT adapter. Make sure you have Dial-up Networking available as a service in your phone. If you open up your BT Manager, you should see it in the list of "Bluetooth Places". If you don't, go to your Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options and make sure that "Bluetooth Modem" shows up under the Modems tab. If it shown here, you will also see what com port the modem is attached to and can check other details by highlighting the "Bluetooth Modem" and clicking on Properties. In the properties window, under the Diagnostics tab, you can query the modem and see the details. When I queried my phone, I saw some GSM info and the model phone.

III. Install PhoCo and run. In the setup, set the com port to the same com port that was noted in the Phone and Modem Options window.

IV. At this point, whenever you run PhoCo, your phone's BT indicator should turn on. If it doesn't, double check the com port usage in the Modem Options window and the com port listed in the PhoCo config file.

If you see that PhoCo is connecting to your phone, but you cannot see your address book even after refreshing or the other buttons do not work, then you need to play around with the PhoneBookLocation elements and attributes in the PhoneCtl.Config.xml file. Pasted below is what I have in the Motorola section of my config file. I have tried this with two different BT adapters(one was a DLink and the other a Belkin) and a v551, v80 and v600. I could not get the battery and signal status indicators to work.

                  Thanks for all the info!!
I don't have time to go through a reinstall today, but will try it in the morning.
One question: You say install the drivers that came with the BT dongle... can I use the Widcomm drivers instead? I thought I read somewhere to install those instead of the ones that came with the BT so thats what I did.
Anyway, I think the Modem connection part is what I am missing, so I will double check all that stuff. Thanks again for the help!

Ok. I tried that. I think I got the PC and phone paired, but every time I try to get a connection between the two of them (by double clicking on the Dial Up icon) I get a "Error 633: Com Port is already open or in use, or modem is not configured properly" message.
If I open Phoco with no connection between the PC and phone it comes up with the splash screen and then the whole screen flashes a couple times and then Phoco is gone.
I will mess with it later today (have to clean the garage now) but if anyone can help with this that would be awesome!
                    Thanks.

                          Had it working.
Now it is hit or miss and I can't figure out whats going on with it. Will mess around with it more tomorrow.

Quick question for you guys that have it working: Is it fully functional with the 551? Can you take calls and hear them through the speakers and talk into a mic, or does it just show your phonebook and let you place calls through the handset?
                          Thanks.

It is NOT fully functional. The BT implementation on the Moto vxxx phones does not support multiple simultaneous connections through any combination of services. Got that?

ex. My v551 has the dial-up networking and file transfer service available for other devices to use.

If I connect to the Internet using the v551 as a modem from my PDA, I cannot initiate a File Transfer session from the PDA or any other device. Now, if I connect my computer to the PDA using the network access profile, I can also initiate a file transfer session. I've been reading up on the BT specs and am still confused as to why Motorola's implementation does not meet the specs.
