heh, with an 8db omini, you can transmit up to 500mw, but that's pretty darn close. I'd say it's running like 3 watts ERP. But, since I'm not using laptop components, and I already have all my wifi equipment, I'm not gonna be getting this, but it is a handy find for other people

I will be using a Linksys WMP54GS and a hyperlink technologies 7db mag mount antenna (http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2407mgu.php). That should give me plenty of reach out and touch power.

200mW USB external for those without a PCMCIA (not sure what the gain is, but it uses an external antenna as well)... used this puppy in Iraq and it worked very well... and it's only 60 bucks!

Im in the middle of ordering my wifi gear and i was planning to order this antenna...
            http://www.rfshop.com.au/Default.asp...ProductID=5890
and run it via this usb adapter.

Ill also need to get a N connector > RP-SMA adapter. The antenna is almost 2m tall but I can make a rear end mounting bracket for it. The only problem I see is the antenna not getting enough power from the usb port to get the full 15db gain. Can anyone comment on this?

to answer my own question, a usb port has a max output of 500ma. When transfered to antenna gain that will support up to 27db. So shes sweet to go.

how did you get that? yes, a USB port can supply 500ma of power to a USB device, but that does not neccisarily (sp?) mean that the radio itself can/is broadcasting at 500mw. Most wifi cards don't put out anywhere near 500mw. I'd say most of them transmit between 25 and 100mw. However, these oddball cards ya'll are finding do transmit more power, which is cool. Just remember that in the US, max power is 4 watts...if you want to stay legal

I got that from a wifi amplifier user manual, a 500ma amplifier supports 27db gain, or so it says. So I figures the power is available for the antenna to use to get the full 15db, thats all I wanted to know.
