I'm still waiting on car manufacturers to start doing that with a mesh topography network.

I was in San Francisco last week and I saw some buses there that advertise WiFi is available in them.

I remember using my cell phone as a wireless modem years ago, before wireless access cards were popular or even available. Had to use the serial port and configure it properly!

I also notice that 1club.fm (a very huge internet radio station) is advertising that 2009 chryslers can listen to them from the car. I wonder how this is going to work.

Just as well(or not) as the data plan for your cell phone. I didn't see where it said which carrier they were going to use though.
          Failure is not an option....

It's installed by default on every version of Windows.

I have to assume that its a universal system that plugs into every cellphone..... for them to limit to just on carrier is kind of dumb.....

Actually, it's smart. Just not for the user.

The cellular radio is going to be built into the cars, completely independent of your cell phone. It's basically onstar with cooler options. Would be cool if they did the all you can eat radio service, but pay for subscriptions, like Amazon is doing with their Kindle. This thing is going to be a black-hat's dream.
