  • Just got USB Orinoco....problem

Theres no place to plug in my 7db antenna. It's the gold version if that matter, does anyone know if maybe this is a newer version or an older version? Or are there modifications that i need to do before i can hook an antenna to it?

Most usb wireless devices I've seen do not have a place for an antenna, unless it's already built on. The only Orinoco device I've seen with an antenna jack are the PCMCIA cards. Lots of PCI cards can take a different antenna, and so can access points, which some you can use in client mode.

Oh! This adapter you have is just like the RG-11 gateways I've used. You can crack open the case, and there will be an unbranded orinoco PCMCIA card inside. You can hook up an antenna to that card, but you will have to drill a hole in the case. You may also have to get an antenna jack adapter (pigtail) if you have a non-orinoco antenna. The antenna jack on the PCMCIA card I believe is called an MC Card.

I did open it, and there is no PCMCIA card in there, its just a regular circuit board type of thing. And there is no place to plug anything in except the usb cable

Do you have any model #'s? You sure that one's orinoco?? One of Orinoco's main selling points is mainstream blah blah with using PCMCIA cards in all of their wireless products.

Sorry man, I don't think it's ornioco. You got taken. $30 ain't bad though. The real orinoco stuff goes for like $65 and higher.

It's got a printed antenna which is very difficult to bypass... I would reccomend not You would need to solder the coax to the base of the printed antenna, then scratch out the copper from the glass. I know how to do this but I would never attempt it unless you don't mind ruining the adapter.

it is an orinoco, cause the box is labled Proxim and Orinoco and so is the card itself.

Yeah, you're right, it's a proxim with orinoco tech. in it. All the Orinoco Gold USB devices I was looking at was Lucent/Agere. They go the extra mile with the PCMCIA cards still. Proxim cheaps out and just integrates. Probably becuase they own orinoco.
