  • help with my wifi setup?

I need some advise on my wi-fi setup, as Im getting nowhere atm.
I recently purchased 2 belkin usb 54g adapters, one for the car and one for the home pc.
My aim is to share files between pc's and access the internet through my home network. As well as accessing wifi hotspots around town when Im on the move..
I've tried setting up an ad-hoc network, with dhcp setup, which I can share files, but not access the internet. My home pc's NIC is setup with static IP 192.168.0.2, my linux box's (gateway) NIC is setup with static IP 192.168.0.1.
I can't seem to work out how to share the internet from my linux box to my home pc then onto my wi-fi network. My linux box is setup with iptables to internet share to 192.160.0.1/24, so everything is on the same subnet. For windows to enable internet sharing it wants to change my home pc's NIC to IP 192.168.0.1 which is not possible. I've also tried bridging my home pc's NIC & wi-fi adapters without success. Setting static Ip's on my home pc and carpc, doest help either. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Try putting the WiFi card in the Linux box and setting it up with your gateway.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

          Hmmm.

Windows can be a pain with internet sharing. You could try setting up DHCP on the network, without a static address on your home computer, if windows doesn't like it's address. You could also see if you could simply "Bridge" the connection between the wireless connection and the wired connection.

If you just cannot get windows to do what you want, why not try some third party software? Have you considered setting up your home computer as a Proxy? One of my friends uses this method on his network using Winproxy software, and it does a fairly good job in a similar situation.

Of course, you could always just plunk down the $80 or so and get a wireless router or access point. I've worked on some ad hoc wireless networks in my day that just would not cooperate and in the end, the money for going the infastructure way was worth the headaches it solved.
Why would anybody want to be stuck driving with a roof over their head?

          Ragtops all the way!
