  • UK broadband lamposts

A new high speed mobile broadband transceiver system to be installed in lamp posts across the UK could help motorists know what's just around the next corner and enable them to receive the latest offers from a range of local retailers.
    http://www.theengineer.co.uk/Article...d+the+bend.htm

This is cool, possibe internet all over the UK at up 400Mbit

How nice would that be for us guys????

The GPS re-routing would be soooo useful off this though. Ties in with what some of you guys are settign up with the webfeed traffic info.

    BUT

    1. What the hell are pople going to view these adverts, maps and public information on? Everyone is going need PCs in their cars - what a crazy idea!

    2. I can't think of anything more annoying and dangerous than people getting adverts poping up on a car display. Imagine women just stopping in the middle of the road because a store has a sale on handbags! Even worse if was shoes they might drive into the store to knock all the other shoe-obsessed women out of the way

(i also put this on the UK site as it was more relevant to the UK but wanted to show off to the rest of the world - especially USA )

Voice over IP would be pretty mint, only thing is whether the handover between 'zones' would work properly, surely it wouldn't keep the connection permanent??

If it does work we could setup a UK Digital Car VOIP Network for in car use and even stream live video direct to/from the cars :-)

I hope it comes mainstream pretty quickly .... 400MBit/s in the car .... drools. I could even setup a mobile ftp server lol

Sounds good. What they forgot to mention was the expected downtime of these lamp posts due to old farts and joyriders crashing into them.

I was at the show at the NEC last week where someone was displaying this, they mentioned being able to have reliable connections to networks around town at speeds up to 250mph

they'll either charge a toll for passing a lamp post or the hardware needed will be under license and cost a couple of billion quid.

Thinking about this a bit deeper and you see where this is going...

...They'll ditch road tax and fuel tax, and you won't pay for the actual internet provided but you'll pay a small charge each time you pass a broadcast lamp, which will effectively bill people relatively on a per use basis, meaning the more miles you drive, the more 'TAX' you'll pay...

This also means that the Gov't will be spending money setting up hi-tech lamp posts and not re-surfacing our horrible roads

Well, I guess this will be Rustyboxx

                        I'm leaning on a lamppost
At the corner of the street
In case a certain little landy comes by.
                        Oh me! Oh my!
I hope the little landy comes by.
                        I don't know if it'll get away,
                        It doesn't always get away,
But anyhow I know that she'll try.
                        Oh me, oh my!
I hope the little landy comes by.

There's no other download I would wait for,
But this one I'd crack any code for.
I don't want to ask what its for.
                        I hope my battery isn't flat;
                        I sure wouldn't like that.
                        This wireless network is beautiful
                        Its marvellous and wonderful,
                        And anyone can understand why

Yep totally I was wondering what system they were going to use for their road charging schemes this is obviously it.
