  • Recording cellphone calls on PC

I'm interested in how one would record an incoming phone call to your hard drive. I'd like to record both my side and the caller's side.

    What is the hardware required?

    What software would be useful?

I don't really know how to go about any of this. I'd ultimately convert the audio into mp3 for storage.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

shouldn't be a problem as long as the person on the other end knows s/he is being recorded. in which case, he didn't ask about legality, he asked how to do it...in which i'm sorry to say i don't know.
        rebuilding carpc... kinda..

Doh! Of course I would let the person on the other end know that I was recording the call. Not looking to do anything illegal here.

I know that the creative software (their music player, I forget what its called) has a "record what you hear" option, so if it is playing throught the card it is recording it.
              AS for the legality,
In many states the person on the other end doesnt have to know... as long as one party knows, and its not an anonymous tap. That is how they listened to Nixon constantly, and how Bush's friend tapped him when he was governor. He did it from a state where it was legal, so it didnt matter where Bush was.
Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Well....because I'm considering starting a Podcast about car computing and I thought that the only time I would have to devote to it would be in my car between work and home. And I thought that doing interviews with people...like...YOU might be pretty cool rather than listening to me rattle on about stupid new car computing software products.

And I thought it would be really cool to do it in the car on the actual carputer!

What I think would be cool is a voice recoder for the carputer (using the built in microphone) that way, if a cop pulls you over, you can record the entire conversation, in case its something useful in court I had a cop pull me over told me this and that, then at court, he made up a new story (probably because he forgot the details of pulling me over that night)...it would have helped me win my case

Might as well take video, too.
If there was a camera in his car, BTW, he has to provide the tape in court, and it should have audio.

Back to the issue. There are also wav editors that record whatever comes thru line in or out and makes a wav file. I cant think of any off the top of my head, but I know I have one, and will look when I get home if youd like.(though im sure there are several that are easy to find, try CNET)

                        JK Audio CellTap ($79)

Connect CellTap between the 2.5 mm earpiece jack of your cell phone and your earpiece or headset. Connect the 3.5 mm mini jack to your line in/mic jack on your computer and use whatever audio recording software you wish. The audio output of the CellTap contains a mix of both sides of the conversation.

It has to start somewhere... It has to start sometime.

If you're using bluetooth-enabled cellphone, you could get the PC to record the audio fairly easily by setting it to record from the Bluetooth Audio mixer I believe.. As for software you'd probably want something simple that encodes directly to MP3, but not sure of a recommendatin.

Perfect! Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Now we'll see if I ever get around to the crux of the idea.
