ive got a new dlink usb wifi thingy.. and it works all good on my desktop pc but in the car it has an error in the system tray? and when i try and repair the connection it wont do it..
ive used winc and it recognises it but it wont create and ip when trying to connect, even when connecting to my own wireless network

im running win xp.. the services are all as the should be.. (i put them all back hoping it would fix it)
and i dont think ive taken anything else out of windows

Well, for one It does'nt "create" an IP. I assume youre trying to use use a Dynamic adress? Make sure your DHCP client is enabled, also Check your TCP/IP settings for automatic address.

DHCP. If you dont know the ins and outs of TCP/IP, now would be a good time to learn.

Since the WiFi is USB based are your other devices that are installed on the USB hub working? I would go in and nuke the USB Hub from Device Manager and the WiFi drivers if there are any installed. Then just reboot and see if Windows XP does an autodetect and sees the USB Hub . If so it will prompt for the drviers from the original Windows XP CD so make sure you have it handy.

Then if there are additional drivers needed for the USB WiFi device install them after the hub has been reinstalled.

it isn't running from the usb hub, its directly in the pc's usb port

The D-Link util is more easy toget a connection with, so it's best not to let WinXP configure your wifi. Do you have some sort of firewall installed in your car? If this is the case, you have to tell it that your home network can be trusted, otherwise you won't be able to connect to your home network...

no reason to have it in the car.

Normally XP's firewall doesn't block a home network, but you can disable it to have a try.
