  • Interface design: an interview with the designers

Here's an interesting interview with the designers of the My Ford touch interface, and basically how they ended up with the interface they have. It touches on a lot of the tradeoffs and decisions they went through.

      Good article.

Oh bonkers!!! I was sketching a similar speedometer layout a few weeks ago that looks almost the same !!! Ahaha, Ford's design is better though

platform - what is our platform here? I don't mean OS.
UI - a few threads here started to get into this but isn't time that we
start moving from banter to drafting?
base line standard - what is our base line for basic functionality?

      Ugh, posting from iPhone ....
While doing my sketchups I was thinking of a few things and didn't see the obvious fact about "platform" which the article brought out.
However, I don't think platform is necessarily just software nor hardware, but rather, a frame of thought.

Can we build the breakout box or not?

Good article. First one I've read where the automotive designers not only understood the potential, they were able to get it into the car!

        >As a team we moved from "It's about an interface" to "It's about an experience."

Precisely. Focusing on a monolithic FE is very last-century. The Ford guys built an FE that did a lot of things as the base. Then, they alluded to the fact that additional functionality would come from add-ons. Not necessarily even plug-ins.

I think I'm going to keep that in mind as I continue to integrate my iPad install. Some type of main FE for common controls, apps for the rest.
