  • Android based headunit - the Parrot Asteroid

And the news from CES is starting to trickle out!

Check out a quick look at a new single din, Android enabled headunit at Anandtech here.

looks interesting, but does look pretty dated. I would just prefer to mount a 7inch Android Tablet in the din slot though. It's just a matter of finding a tablet that will do 3G, GPS, OBD-II etc.

You have to remember that the world is divided into two spheres: there's the people who hang out on this forum, and then there's the rest of humanity.

I agree with you that it seems a pretty mediocre attempt at putting an android computer into the car - but if you think of it more as a single din bluetooth speaker phone with additional music playing/headunit capabilities, you will begin to see where the rest of humanity might have a use for it. One non-carpc person I showed that article to was intrigued by the capabilities, but thought it looked ugly.

The rest of us would be more likely to go the route you've pointed out.

Agreed. I think Parrot would be much better off making a tablet with a double-din dock.
        - The tablet should have a car specific UI when you put the tablet in the dock.
        - The GPS and 3G should be built into the tablet, or usb ports in the dock for GPS and 3G
        - The OBD-II and steering-wheel stereo adaptors can be built into the dock.

This would be much better than a dated looking headunit who's only key feature is it runs Android...

Nice, looks like someone is already having a crack at it with the iPad

while it is a great idea, i think it is horrible in the overall concept.. so cars will soon be coming with a $600 easily removable device that you can't even adjust the seat/temp/fan without?

and how many consumers are really going to remove their ipad every time they get in and out of the car to prevent a possible theft? i doubt it would be very many..
