    Sean Clark shows us how to run the various cables for each peripheral. Get creative. Wires can be run in more places than you think. Remember to be careful when you're prying against plastic interior panels and use a cloth to protect them. Zip ties work wonders to attach components behind your dash. Make sure to allow enough space for HVAC vents when zip tying your items in tight spaces. Purchasing a wiring harness for your vehicle eliminates the need to splice factory wiring. One can easily tap into each speaker channel and feed to your aftermarket amplifier with a vehicle specific harness.

    I couldn't help but notice your use of wire crimps, honestly, especially in a vehicular environment with vibrations, stop and go ect... Solder and heat shrink would have been a more time consuming but wiser choice. Other than that the install is coming out very nicely!

      he... you should see some of my "crimps". Its amazing i'm 7 years strong into the hobby and havent had a single fire. I should probably have stock share in some electrical tape corporation.

            the videos seem to be getting shorter?

            some great points on using the sacrificial harness for wire connections, and using the coat hanger-- while doing this, it doesn't hurt to tape the wire to the coat hanger to help keep them together a little better(i fish wires through my car using this method).

            i am not crazy about crimp connectors either, esp for someone new to using them, though as long as they are crimped correctly, they should not have many problems-- i prefer a crimper like this that crimps the connector in a 'U' shape, as those seem to create a better connection then the other versions of crimpers.


            of note: of the cars i have installed sound systems in, i have found that a wire run from a engine bay battery to the truck is usually just around 20ft, so i always order 20ft of power wire. at the very worst, you end up with 2-4ft extra, and if you used pure copper wire, take it in for scrap, and get some of your money back.

              I never thought to record the crimping action. But we have heavy duty ratcheting crimpers that allow me to interchange heads for the various crimp sizes.

                ^ that would be perfect for people new to crimping, though at about $100-200/ea, are well above the hobbist-cost... the crimper in my post is currently $23.99 on amazon. just be sure to squeeze it all the way closed to complete a crimp(that's where i really like the ratcheting action of the more expensive model-- it won't let you release until the crimp is complete).



                off topic, but what flashlight are you using in the car?

                  One thing a new crimper user can do is use the floor or table against the crimp handle at an angle. That uses the "Natural Force" of the crimp tool closing against the floor, which is much stronger than your hand muscles. (we had to do this even with the rachet for the 8 gauge hot wire)

                  Its some camera light we had in the camera box. I highly DONT recommend it. It burnt through stephens pants, and every time it fell we had to scramble to pick it up because it would have very quickly caught the seat on fire.

                    I can think of a couple things but it is really nitpicking, I guess. The coat hanger method is always a good tool. However, and I know you said you could see the hole you wanted to go through, but sometimes it would be best to remove the panel. This way you are not blindly poking around esp. under the dash.

                    Solder and heat shrink FTW. I can't see recommending just twisting and taping wires with electrical tape. Too many possibilities of coming undone and who wants to do this several times? Those intermittent grounds, etc. can be hard to diagnose. Crimping should be okay with a good crimper.

                    In my build I have found it is best to use the after market harness for speaker wiring to 4 channel amp as you mentioned. It's also a good source for your ignition on/off wiring trigger.

                      I am very pleased to see this video series for a car PC install. I have been wanting to do just such a project for a while, and have been reading and researching for some time now, trying to gain more knowledge and confidence before I pull the trigger. These videos are by far one of the most helpful things I have seen. And even more so for me, since I also have a 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe. Boy, was I pleased to see that happy coincidence! The only differences I see are that I have a standard transmission, and for some reason Nissan disn't offer the nav computer package with the manual transmission. I'm not sure if that was based on a practical, physical reason, or if it was just a random marketing decision, or even if that would make a difference in a PC install for my vehicle. Also, I have the BOSE system. Would this make any difference for, say, the need for an amp, or difference in wiring, or different dash kit (I think it might, as I have the dual-zone controls) or or anything else?
                      I love my 3.5L coupe, and I am looking forward to tackling this same project. Keep up the good work, and thanks for listening. I'll be following you all the way!

                          ^ i don't like those oval crimpers-- i've had a lot of loose crimps with those types even when i made sure to fully crimp the entire connector. i always end up using the bumps between settings to get the connector to better crimp...

                          hence the reason i recommended a crimper that has a 'nipple' on it to better force the wire to meld with the connector.

                            Not taking the panels off the car creates a possible problem, by not removing that panel you risk the issue of catching the wire in the steering column behind the panel....also crimps should not be used , you can't see how much wire your contacting with the crimp and you risk the issue of breaking the strands. With the crimp. Solder is the way ... Sorry bud

                              solder is the best way, but soldering is much more of a art form then other methods, and can be very hard for many to learn, esp if they are only using it for 1 project. hence, crimping is the next-best, less-learning-required, preferred method.
