  • Jebus awarded Win 7 to develop RR Voice and other plugins for Win 7

    Hey Guys,

Just an FYI - I wanted to make sure we were supporting the effort put into RRVoice and supporting the development of pluggins for RR that run on Win7.

Thanks for your hard work Jebus!

Here is an update on this.
I recieved Win7 by USPS. It was packaged for the trip by MP3Car.
After considering which PC was going to be the "victim", I chose my main HA computer.
I did this for two reasons. It was slated for an OP sys overhaul because I had purchased the special HomeSeer Pro upgrade late last year and never installed it. This is a .Net app now. I am also running LCD Studio on it for a VFD display mounted in the front of a nice Silverstone case. LCD Studio is also a .Net app.
It has 2 gigs ram and had a 775 3 ghz p4 on an Asus board. Notice I say had...
I set about to locate one of my drives and installed it to the box so as to not destroy my existing setup. I stuck the DVD in and booted.
Setup went smooth for a minute till it asked for a driver for the chipset on the board. An off brand Raid chipset mind you. Went to Asus site and found out that my board is not supported in Win7 and never will be...crap.
No problem except it is one of the only 775 boards I have, the other is in an MSI HTPC, and in use.. crap...
So, found another of my boards to put in, a 478 intel board. Stepped down to a P4 2.4 ghz HT chip. Installed board, and chip and booted.
This time setup went through and found everything just fine. Win7 is installed. Around 35 minutes from start to finish.
I played around with it for a bit, realizing that it is fairly quick and polished. I installed all my apps and did some stress testing, loading a bunch of apps and going thru the settings to make it stop asking if I know what I'm doing. Screw UAC. I'm behind a linux Nat/Firewall so I turned all the bull off. Ten years of running behind a linux box, I've never had a need for MS to protect me. As if they could..

I am in the process of outlining, on paper, the code flow that I want for RRVoice.net. I am also going to try and discover if RRVoice can run "as is" on Win7. From my research, it should... We'll see...

So, given the fact that I have a more than full time job, I think I have done well here. This is not going to happen overnight, but I am on my way to getting RRVoice compatible with Win7.

I don't know if this is the place to provide updates on this, if not, it can be moved.

I have to thank MP3Car.com staff for their generosity and support to this community.

Without MP3Car there would be a whole lot more geeks wandering the interwebs, looking for a place to be.

    Thank You MP3Car staff...

im excited. right now im forced to use winxp, but as soon as you get rrvoice to work in win7 i wont hesitate to go back. i know you dont use the windows gui in a carpc very often, but those times where you just need a real computer there is no comparison, win7 is excellent.

A small update on this topic...

I have installed SAPI 5.1 on Win7 Pro...

It does not work as advertised...tries to run the Desktop VR

I have the Win7 built in Desktop VR turned off...

I have HomeSeer Pro installed on this computer...

It's Dot Net VR works as advertised...

I have RideRunner installed on this computer...

I am in the process of installing and testing the rest of the skins and plugins, namely RRVoice...

Just a heads up...SAPI 5.1 is designed for XP only... Sapi 5.4 is what comes pre-installed on win7

It installs and actually works as intended, It just uses the newest SAPI version, in my case SAPI 5.4 and VR engine 8.0.
You can load and run the VB examples, they all use late binding and load the newest Objects available...

It depends on the features you use... some of the 5.1 functions are not present in the 5.4 API (depreciated 5-10years ago)...so if you hit one its going to crash hard. Just a heads up in case you run into that.

                    If you could Justchat_1,
Please point out something in here that states SAPI will crash hard if you call an "depreciated" function...
