    Delay when using FD and BU-353

    I'm getting a strange problem with FD using the BU-353. The voice prompts seem to be happening at exactly the right time, but the map seems to show me around 20-30 yds behind my real location.
    I used to have the BU-303, and this was always spot on, but I very rarely had more than 3-4 sat locks, and a lot of the time, none. The BU-353 seems to have solved the sat lock issue, but doesn't seem to track my location anywhere near as accurately as the BU-303? I've tried using another BU-353, and I'm getting the same problem, so I don't believe that it is the GPS mouse.
    I'm running an MII 10000, FD 0.9FULL. I've done a search, and I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this issue. Any ideas please? Many thanks.

    Is the baud rate set correctly and is it running NMEA not SIRF?

    Hi, just been out to check.. Baud Rate 4800, definitely NMEA and not SIRF. The usb mouse is on COM3.

    there is some lag when using nmea 4800 baud and the gps unit you have works to about 10 meters. I have tried to find some examples of sirf mode in vb so I can use this mode as it would solve the problem you ( and I ) are having, but cant find anything. If anyone fancys helping on this score then drop me a pm please..

    Well I suppose I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem.. !! I had visions of being told I was being a pleb, as I am still a bit of a rookie when it comes to car computers!!
    I am a little confused as to why it worked perfectly with the BU-303 though, as it was using the same protocol. There must be a reason why I now get an average of 7 sat locks, and on the old unit, I used to get about 3, which I presume is down to the fact that there is more processing going on within the gps mouse maybe, thereby causing the lag?
    Netmgr - It's not just at high speed that the problem exists, I get it all the time driving around London, which as you can imagine, is a lot slower than 70mph.. In addition, I'm not sure that it ever actually catches up with you, even if I stop at a junction?

    Yes, my old BU-303 was spot on too, it's only since I've swapped to the BU-353 that I've had this issue, but at least I get a signal pretty much everywhere now, unlike before.
    CdR - what do you reckon then? Do you think that you will be trying to fix this, or should I investigate alternatives for the GPS? Many thanks..

    p.s. Keep up the good work on the software.. other than the small issue above, and the volume issue which I know has been discussed elsewhere, the software is spot on..

    I have a BU-303 and have observed this same problem on a couple of occasions in the last month or so. However, the problem has been transient and prior to that time I've used it for over a year without seeing the issue. I used it yesterday and it worked fine.

    I suspect it is something to do with the hardware calculating the position incorrectly. In my case, on the monitor it was about an "inch" to the left of the road I was on when using auto-zoom at 70mph. Not sure what the map scale is at this speed but you get the idea. There is no catch-up when you stop or apparent 'lag' - it just has the wrong position on the map.

    So this issue isn't restricted to the 353.

    what about making it predictive like tomtom seems to be, just because the gps upates once a second does'nt mean the screen has to does it? noticed today if tom is switched off whilst driving, when switched back on it believes your are where you was when you switched it off, and moves the map accordingly until a valid gps signal is found, so it's been predictive, yes? could'nt you make fd do the same (CDR) this would make for smoother mapping and because the screen has been refreshed 3 or 4 times and fd has moved you up the map say 10-20 yards before the next gps data comes in then things may become more accurate.

    hopefully this will make sense to someone

    Here at the College where I work we have a multi million $ marine (ship) simulator that does exactly that. All position updates are sent over the network at 1 second intervals, but the visuals interpolate and update at 25 fps. In essence the simulator guesstimates the positions of everything until the next 1 second position update comes along.

    IMO, something like this in FD would be great !
