    This Kicks ***!

    Hey Man,

I've been playing around with MediaEngine for a while and as great as it is, your program seems so much more simple and straightforward!

I'm sure you'll get loads of requests to add functions etc to it (I'll have a few once I'm fully up and running) but hopefully you'll manage to keep it as clean as it is at the moment!

    Rock on,

    Andy

Thanks! The whole goal of Freeway was to make a lightweight, clean-cut front end, and it's going to stay that way. Can't wait to hear your suggestions.

    Cheers!

Ha ha, OK then. I had a bit of a play last night and this is what I found:

When a DVD is playing trailers, if you push skip etc normally a dvd player will tell you that the menu item is currently unavailable....Freeway just crashes lol!

I don't know if this is because I haven't set up winamp properly but when I browse by artist, because some of my audio files are named track number first (i do this for compilations where order is important), i get the choice of artist '01', '02' etc.

I'm pretty sure all my mp3 tags are set up properly because they're fine in iTunes. Would it not be better to base the library on tags rather than filenames

If you could do this you could also make it possible to browse by genre, which I use all the time on my ipod!

Ooh and another couple of things that have sprung to mind...

When using the up and down buttons, it would be good if holding the buttons cycled through each page, kind of like scrolling through the list. At the moment you have to repeatedly click.

Oh and I've put a CD in my drive...in Winamp you can select 'play> audio CD'. But I can't find a way to play it using Freeway. It would be good if the D: appeared under playlists or something. Like how 'play DVD' appears under Videos

I know I've got alot of suggestions, don't mean to be cheeky, just well pleased I've found some software that (pretty much) does what I've been looking for.

    What's the error message?

I don't know if this is because I haven't set up winamp properly but when I browse by artist, because some of my audio files are named track number first (i do this for compilations where order is important), i get the choice of artist '01', '02' etc.

Freeway does check the tags, if you're using MP3 or OGG files (are you?). If you are, then the files starting with the track number have no tags or have the track numbers inside the artist field of the tag.

If you could do this you could also make it possible to browse by genre, which I use all the time on my ipod!
I'm holding off on this for the time being because I had some problems getting the genre out of OGG or MP3 tags (can't remember which) in the past. I'll work on it when I get a chance, though.

    I'll work on this, too.

I'm always looking for suggestions. Thanks... you have some good ones.

    Cheers!

The error message from the DVD problem is
    Run-time error ‘-2147220874 (80040276)’:

This user operation is inhibited by DVD Content at this time
And regarding the mp3 tag thing... its because I imported some music in iTunes which saves them as m4u files not mp3s. Bugger. Is there a plug-in for winamp which enables it to read m4u tags?

Winamp does read the tags for m4a files. Freeway does not, that's why it's not looking right in your library.

This program sure does KICK ***!!!! I have been trying to get Roadrunner going after my new install 2 weeks ago, & it is so bagged & slow with so many settings - probably something is wrong - it is very confusing. Any way, out of desperation I decided to try this and WOW! This ROCKS! Only a couple of settings in the ini file & I am good to go! Thanks Alot Oeri! Once Google earth works, I will have died and gone to heaven! There are so few settings, it is just so darn easy to set up!

You mentioned suggestions in post #2 Oeri,
-How about an easy way to switch skins?
-If there were a skin editor, I would try my stab at a skin. (maybe I can still take an existing one & make it into something new?)
-How about reading the art embedded inside the mp3?

A-ten - "I imported some music in iTunes which saves them as m4u files not mp3s."

Just FYI to help you out...

You can go into iTunes preferences and put the encoder on MP3 instead of their default AAC. This will do two things:

1.) Allow you to highlight the entire library, then click on ADVANCED and click on Convert Selection to MP3.

2.) Anything else you rip in the future will rip to MP3 instead of AAC.

    Thanks Zero260.

If possible, I'd like to keep them as .m4a though. As far as I can tell its a better format because the files are smaller and I can't notice a difference in quality.

Hopefully Oeri will accomodate them in FWU.
