    Cool New found skinning obsession...

I've decided to bite the bullet and create my own skin from scratch.

As a development of my 'febs a la chrome' thread, I've opted to combine all the materials - wood burl, chrome, steel and glass into an interface which I hope will look like it was factory fitted into my car.

The screenshot below is very much bare-bones (no function buttons defined yet) but I'd like some input on how you think it should develop - which buttons should be added, which buttons are surplus to requirements, etc..

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks, I can develop the other parts (menu, radio, fullscreen, destinator, etc) to form a complete skin to share.

I know a skin's success is down to the individual's taste but I'd like some comments anyway.

    Thanks for looking...

Wow, i'm really diggin this layout,

    Nice album- playlist transfer,
i love the equalizer at the top, and the metal glas wood blend is beautiful

I really like the simplicity, so try not to overcrowd with all the buttons.
You might wanna make the playlist font bigger... the none-bold font can be really hard to read in the light sometimes.

    Great work though,

    Total = $746....Carputer = Priceless

    Button surrounds

Ok, forget the actual button facings for now, I'm just wondering what you think of having each button with a chrome surround?

    Opinions pls

    Smile Button Effects in place

Ok, buttons are filled with glass texture, you can see the 'down' state of a couple of the buttons (pause, mute, shuffle)

If green isn't to your taste, the button glass can be recoloured to match Audi (Red) BMW (Amber) etc...

I'm fairly happy with this layout and will progress to the rest of the skin in this style.

As always I am open to comments, praise, criticism and suggestions.

    Don't just read - post!

    hmm..

    still really like the skin.....
but everything got so crowded with the buttons.
everything individualy outlined and overlapping makes it look a little messy and randomish(like when i've got 30 programs open on my desktop)

Maybe if you could make the buttons wood, and blend them into the wood frame (in the same /---\ shape that you have the date/time box in, running off the edge)...
do something to make the new buttons look like part of the skin
or if you like it, just leave it be,
    just my ops

yeah I agree, the buttons did make it cluttered

maybe like what was suggested, make them blend in a little more.

    Question A problem of contrast?

    Hmm,

As far as I see it, the buttons need to meet 2 criteria:

    1) Size: must be large enough to be easily pressed with a finger
note: buttons I think seldom used are smaller

    2) Visibility: must be easily recognisable so you're not distracted from the road to find them.

Also I've grouped the buttons to reduce the chance of error -
e.g. nothing but play controls at bottom, so if you miss the button you wanted to press (going over a bump) it's only a play control that will be affected, which in turn means your attention will be kept on the road, rather than having to suddenly concentrate on the screen to find the right button.

With the above in mind I'm not really keen on changing the number of buttons or their layout for now. It could be a problem of contrast, so I've reskinned the bezel in a few flavours to see if any of these look less crowded...
