    Frodo in RamDrive

    Hi

I have got my carPC up and running ( still waiting for the screen ). It's a Via Epia-V 533Mhz with 1 Gb of RAM.

Would it be worth running Frodo from a RamDrive. It's a little slow transitioning between screens, eg: the main screen and the settings screen. I was also thinking of loading Destinator into the RamDrive (including the maps).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

you would have to install them both to the ram drive.. and during startup.. copy the files back to their correct locations after the ram drive is created... before frodo would run..

i personally think the time lost in copying back and forth during startup is not worth the performance increase youwould get from running it off the ram drive...

Nope - just a prog that creates a virtual drive in RAM and assigns it a drive letter. After everything is running, I've got about 300mb of free unused memory, so if Frodo did a lot of disk access stuff while it's running, it would seem that this would help make it run better.

Of course, ideally, I would like to be able to copy the 'next' mp3 from disk into the RamDisk, and play it from there, instead of streaming from the disk all the time, then before that song finishes, copy the next one into Ram etc etc.

Would save wear and tear on the disc anyway....

how fast is your hard drive?.. is write-behind caching enabled on it ?

I have a 7200 RPM drive.. and although I notice a lag between screens.. well only between XM and the main menu... everything else runs fast...

if my EPIA supported SATA.. I would have gotten a 10,000 rpm drive..

I really dont think it would be worth it either - if you have a decent speed proc - you are getting all the speed out of frodo that you will prolly see.

Also the time of copying stuff back will mean longer boots times for a near $null improvment

...just my thoughts, let us know how it works for you if you decide to do it

There are some inefficiencies in the way frodoplayer switches screens, I am slowly
    correcting them.
