    Rant on non-menu-centric-systems

I really don't understand the philosophy of making FP an mp3-centric product as opposed to a menu based. I would think that the system should be centered around a menu because it's capable of so much more than just PLAYING something. There are "patches" that bring up the menu when started and have functions return to the menu but this doesn't sufficiently hide the fact that it's configured as an mp3 player with add-ons.

One example of this irritation is that even with the menu options enabled, when FP is started, it momentarily displays the player screen and announces the playlist/directory selection before announcing "menu". Even worse is that if I shutdown the computer with an mp3 playing, it resumes playing upon startup. Perfect example: I took a rather conservative client out to lunch yesterday with my car and when FP started, it immediately resumed playing a rather raunchy rap song I'd listened to the night before!

When you have built your interface software, let us know and we'll try it out

    yeah, but

This is the main reason I do not use FP. However, FP seems to be the most actively developed project (at least in terms of releases), so I hope it eventually meets my needs.

The gripe about the music resuming doesn't seem legit though.. How is this different from a normal CD player in your car? I for one, like this feature.

Because this is what 99% of everyone in here wants. Don't use it if you don't like it, because you definitely aren't in the majority. Better yet, go build your own.

I prefer menu centric as well, but I would rather work on my car than write software; which I do all day at work.

So I will use FP with the options to make it more menu centric.

Of the six posts above, three are pro-menu, two are flames, and one non-committed. Doesn't sound like 99%, may even be a majority, who knows. Bottom line is that Frodo has decided on his approach, and this forum is the key feedback mechanism he has to guide his development. I've donated several hundred dollars to guys working on this carpc project to pat them on the back for what they're doing. I think I'm entitled to an opinion/suggestion without flames (unless you guys are chipping in more than me). BTW: I don't play porno on the carpc because I don't like driving with just one hand.

My post was just as much of an "opinion/suggestion" as was yours. I am really proud of you for donating so much money. I will now bow down and start worshipping.

I guess you can't please all the people all the time

Whether or not the interface is menu-oriented or media-oriented, you're not going to find a solution that everyone is happy with.

I know that the momentary player screen can make the application look a little rough around the edges but it is after all a computer program that has been written (for free) by someone who wants to make our in-car lives more enjoyable.

If you had an OEM audio system... for example, bmw's system has no touchscreen but 2 rotary dial inputs which are fiddly to operate, you have a choice of 3 colourschemes - none of which I'm particularly fond of - and the fonts used don't really inspire class.

Despite these shortcomings, would you complain to your bmw dealer?

I think it's more the way the complaint has been put, rather than the content that has rubbed people up the wrong way...
