try booting your pc with the cable unplugged, then plug in the serial cable after you have finished booting and open the xm program.
I was having some weird problems with the serial connection as well.
I can use the XMD on my laptop like its nothing, it will plug in and unplug all day long and work without restarting. My desktop however, is very picky. Sometimes it will work, other times it won't.
Is there a program to refresh the serial connections/com port?
Restarting the computer and then plugging in the serial cable sounds like the next step for you. That had worked for me once or twice.
