night version looks better
I suggest a little bit of circle there
and this kind of skin is better for the frontend like centrafuse and pycar
frodoplayer need moive preview window
So I'm close to starting my install, and I was shopping around for skins. There are some awesome ones out there, but I can't seem to find one that fulfills the following requirements:
- Big buttons
- Often used buttons located at left side of screen
- Big song/artist text for what's currently playing
- No mini visualizations on the main music-playing screen
- Inspiration from a BMW E46 dash
I'm brand-new to skinning, and from what I've read I think I understand the concepts, but I'm not an artist - so I've created a skin mock-up in Powerpoint (ugh). I'm very interested in getting everyone's opinion on the design and layout, and even more interested if there's someone out there that's good at making skins that would give it a try. Here's what I've got so far:
Night version:
![]()
Day version (maybe):
![]()
Simple, big buttons, all red at night, and hopefully will end up looking like it matches the rest of my dash. I thought about making the text use the LCD grid font, and I still may (since other areas of the car have similar-looking fonts), but I thought I'd try this first.
Let me know what you think, and if anyone wants to take a shot at producing a skin from this.

I suggest you don't use LCD grid font for text... too wide (it's fixed size)... you can use it for the texts that never change length, like volume, data, time or lables...
Also I don't think it's possible to have artist and song lists separately... but maybe I'm wrong...

Can't you specify a "null zone" for where the mini visualization window occurs in FrodoPlayer? I still want the vis for the full-screen, just not for the standard music playing window.Originally Posted by dragonBTV
i like it, driving a e36 bmw i think it looks great for bmws, what about making the buttons more like the buttons on the stock radio (giving them some texture)? also, how about a gps button. with the columns for artist and song, they sould be artist and album

Here's the thread that this guy started.
I thought about this - and while it's nice to have the buttons on the screen look like the other buttons, I'm not sure it's best - I guess I think that since the buttons will be displayed on an LCD screen, I'd rather the buttons be suited to an LCD screen, rather than suited to physical buttons. I don't know, I'll probably flip-flop on this a few more times.![]()

i like that one you show there Hark, but it still seems a bit cluttered. I like your idea on kepping visualization out of it and making song title and artist bigger. That skin looks pretty nice though

Nah, still struggling with my install - and hoping that someone more adept than I will take it on. However, it looks like it may have gotten a lot easier with this.
