Thread: Fujitsu Stylistic st4110 Tablet PC

yah but......You have a full pc in your car with a bunch of cables. This ones only 10 inchs. You could make it fit in your dash with all the cables connected. No need to pull it out each time. Leave it in mounted into backseets and front dash. Network them all together to a big pc in the trunk with all the video/music you want.

tablets are awesome carpc's, you don't have to just plop it on the dash, you can take it apart & build it in even. I did this with my latest install & the one before that too.

the tablet I used was an st5021, it's a 10.4" screen too, but it's a fully reflective screen, reflective is sick in the sun & it's much better in the sun than even transflective.

it uses a 1.2 pentium m ultra low voltage processor, but it's pretty strong actually, flash skins & all are no problem, def enough for the car. with 512 ram & a 60 gig hardrive it ws under $700, including a legit copy of tablet edition & a digitizer built in.

what I did was disasemble it & build it into the dash, I was able to mount the motherboard part in the dash & the screen on a bezel I built... I also put a touchscreen over it & can now switch between digitizer & touchscreen... if you've ever used a digitizer you know it's awesome, especially with tablets built in on screen keyboard, theres a magnetic pen & the mouse follows the movement of the tip before you even touch the screen, making precise touches very easy, you can see the mouse tip before you even click, but when driving you want just a finger touch, no problem there either

it takes a lot of work to build a tablet inrto a dash, but no more work really that going with a rawscreen anyway, & the best part is everything is included with the tablet, my whole carpc cost around the same as a transflective lilli




















this next picture is the reflective screen in direct blinding sunlight, notice how white even the black bezel is from the sun, if your going to go thru all the work, don't do it with a weak dim tablet, for just a few hundred more these tablets are a steal for what you get.

They are 800Mhz 10inch touch screen Tablet Pc's for about 300 bucks. Thats a screen and computer for almost the same price as a screen. If i had the money I would buy a couple and have like 3 screens in my car each with there own computer.

O.K. Someone needs to chime in here with some hard facts:

1. Fujitsu has several dozen tablet PCs. Some model numbers end in 0, 1, and 2, i.e. ST4120, ST4121 or ST5130, ST5031, ST5032. As far as I can tell if it ends in 0 it has a [HL]10 inches[/HL] [HL]indoor [/HL]screen. If it ends in 1 its a [HL]10 in with[/HL] [HL]outdoor [/HL](front-lit screen). If it ends in 2 it has a [HL]12 inch indoor screen[/HL].

2. Fujitsu decided to follow the Microsoft plan for Tablet PCs there for all Stylistic tablets after the 3500 have the Electromagnetic (active) digitizer with a magnetic pen as Turbocad said earlier. I also found out it has to be their pen, pens from other TabletPC-compliant systems rarely work and a pen from a pocket organizer or pocketPC is totally out of the question. These are nothing like touchscreens. No Fujitsu pen, No pointer. On the 3500s it was touch, but had palm rejection for writing and therefore required a fingernails touch as opposed to a finger or fingertip.

3. Another thing Turbocad brought up was disassembling and add-ons. The 4110 like my 4121 only has USB 1.1, IRDA 1.1 and no bluetooth. What thet do have is not one but two robust USB connectors (tight-fitting and well powered). I have eight devices running off one port with no problems. I, like Turbocad have disassembled my units several times and they are well-built (unlike a Lilliput with its weak internal connectors.) And if anyone tells you the can't be modded they're wrong. I went another route than Turbocad, I bought docking stations for each of my cars. If you look at the first picture in Turbocads post it shows the tablet locked in the desktop dock. I disassembled the dock, and stuck the 8"x 6" base's guts into my dash and ran an extension cable to the slotload DVD-RW that I crammed into my headunit.

Given the above you probably will never hear about anyone with a 4110 cause it sucks for a car environment. Search for "fujitsu" or "TabletPC" for more info.

I use a 4121 and Turbocad uses a 5021 - both 10 inch front-lit screens. I will say this, they have dramatically improved the internal soundcard to the point where instead of adding a line driver with my previous 3500, I have to turn down the wave volume to 35% so it doesn't distort (I'd estimate the line out has a good 2-4V signal). The USB as mentioned earlier has a lot more amperage than most 1.1 PC devices. The outdoor screens are phenominal in my convertable although it does add a significant amount of light in the car at night, so a dark night skin is recommended.

Overall, of the dozen or so TabletPCs that I've owned, the Fujitsus were by far the best value, most reliable, solid, rugged, light and long-lasting.


P.S. Hey Turbocad, I thought you had a ST5031 ??????

yeah man, I just copied that from my install thread & I musta typo'd there, just checked & it's a st5031 with the 1.2 chip with the 2mb l2 cache... don't let this thing fool you, it's powerful while using very little power, it can stand by for days on it's own battery no problem. almost instant on when I use standby.

getting the right tablet is important, the indoor screens will be pretty bad. overall these are a deal, considering all that they include, outdoor screen & all, I am using a touchscreen over the screen with the digitizer, they work well togeather, but when you click with the digitizer pen it registers as a double click, cause one click from the digitizer & one from the touchscreen, so I'm putting a sensor in the sleeve that holds my digitizer pen, when I slide the pen out of the sleeve it'll unpower the touchscreen, then, when the pen is returned to it's sleeve the touchscreen repowers... it works great with this dual mode.

I did consider just docking mine & leaving it intact & removable, but just no space for that, I wanted the dash to look factory, if you have the space for that it's a great idea.

I agree that the fujitsus are built well & work good for this, the screen is one of the most important considerations in choosing a tablet I'd say, this screen is usable 100% of the time, even with a touchscreen overlay on top of it

Wow, that is a really nice install man! I have a couple old Fujitsu tablets here that I used to use for Home Automation stuff, never though about putting RR on them. They are older, and the screens def do not show well in the daylight. The are also running 98, and cant not find TS drivers for XP for them. The only advantage of that is the screes are standard touchscreen, and no need for a stylus. Major drawback are the usb 1.0 ports.

What model #s do you have. I have XP on 2300, 1600, 3400, and 3500s,

They are 1600's. I searched a couple years back, and could not find a TS driver that would work with it.

Yeah the 1600s are a real PITA. I finally got a tip off the TabletPC forums about intalling XP and th CIC pen drivers, but after maxing out the memory doing the drive swap trick to get XP loaded and all the other junk - IT RAN SLOW AS MOLASSES! I gave up on it cause it wouldn't multitask well and I was using it primarily for home automation and voip. Went back to 98SE and jut used older programs - works great for the kids to play simple network games and surf the net within a block from home.
