Vista, NVIDIA, Ram, and Brain (Compatability) updated! code 10 in xp

I hate vista...

Well, a bunch of my parts are coming in, and I'm getting to the point where I would really benefit from having the outputs working, which would mean I have to get my brain working. And being that so far I have been the only one to have these problems on a persistant basis, I figured it's time to either pull my xp puter out of my truck, put together another xp computer, or finger out what is wrong with my two vista machines. Other than running on Operating System software that should have never made it past beta testing, nothing has been too terribly wrong with my HP's.

I preferred to start with the last choice. I did a bunch of re-google-search, and found the following sites regarding the issue

Some of these sites report on similar issues to the ones I'm having, some are xp but there's a substantial amount of vista ones. A lot of people report that all of a sudden, a device malfunctions, and afterwards, all devices malfunction (not happening for me).

Many of the reporters are using similar HP's running AMD turion64's like me.

I've tried suggestions like, removing hidden drivers, 'restacking the drivers', etc. but nothing seemed to work. The two microsoft updates on similar issues, when downloaded and installed, pop up a dialog saying they don't apply to my computer.

And still, no luck. So, as I was just about to go and (finally) put a new PCI usb2.0 card in my PC, I thought, "hmmm, 2 ram chips... Ok, why not..." So I removed one (512M...oh well, worth the try...) But I continued on, thinking,"maybe it is an IRQ problem"... Rebooted (it took FOREVER on 512M) and a new hardware wizard popped up:"Windows needs to install driver software for -NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE" So I let it, and checked out my device manager...

I have 2Meg Ram in my laptop, and haven't tried it as of yet, but I'm thinking I'll have similar 'success'.

Wow, that's just goofy. Stupid Vista.

So as I continued to try to install the driver, I got that code10 start-error, and things were going pretty darned slow, to say the least. I then turned off the computer, installed my puny ram chip back in, and decided to restart without taking the next step of installing the PCI USB2.0 board. It did install the NVIDIA driver, so...maybe...

Sure enough, with full ram, and a power up, Da Fusion Brain still exists in my Device Manager, with the driver working properly. I didn't babysit the restart, so I'm not sure if it automatically re-installed the driver, or if it ended up happy with my previous attempt.

That is my weirdest hardware install to date. Time to try the same process with the laptop.

But until then, I'm officially a Fusion Brain user now.:peace:

Well I did the same procedure with the laptop, but when the computer came back up with one less ram chip, it didn't want to install anything new, like an NVIDIA driver. I didn't give up, I uninstalled all of my USB devices, plugged in the brain, and let them reinstall. The brain was recognized (I'll spoil the ending now and let you know this was short lived). The driver install got to that code10 install error, so I shut it down, installed the ram and restarted. Funny thing though, as the laptop was coming back up, it stayed in a continuous cycle of the fan starting and then shutting down. Only after I removed the brain did it start up fully, I checked bios on the way up, and noticed there were no usb options present; not even the legacy enable option, there was the boot order where a boot off of a USB HD is allowed, but last on the list, and there were no options to disable it, I could only re-order it. I doubt that would have done me any good. I exited without changes. Once again I got stuck in the fan cycling with a black screen. I unplugged the brain again and waited till the windows splash started and plugged back in. And now I'm back to the same ol' Unkown device problem...

I hate vista.

But it still works on the one computer right? So the Brain isn't faulty we know now... Just that your computer hates it!

What type of laptop is it? Trying to find out what USB controller it uses...

The PC didn't stay working with the brain once I unplugged and replugged the brain. I tried the PCI thing, and it didn't work. Currently I'm in the process of unplugging the ram again (vista's so darned slow on 512M ram) to get it working.

The laptop is a HP Pavillion dv6000 (DV6436NR)

I'm back to square one, "unknown device" on both computers.

I was pretty sure neither of my brains were faulty when I started this, especially when you said you test every one before shipping.

I do all of my tinkering on these vista machines, that's why I was so hesitant to put together a XP machine. But it looks like that's what I need to do. I was just hoping fixing this for my setup would not only work for me and possibly help some future HP/Vista victim.

Well I do all my dev. work now on my Vista laptop. Its a pure intel machine, works flawlessly. T7600, 2Gb RAM, and Intel 82801 USB controller with Intel video chip...

So I guess Vista just needs better support for drivers. I know last July before Vista went public, I installed it in a computer with dual Nvidia 6800s (top of the line then ;)) and that was the worst performance I had ever seen. I hope they have improved since, but no more nvidia/vista combo's for me...

Does your laptop have a PCMCIA slot? If it does, if you go to CompUSA you can pick up a PCMCIA to USB for the laptop, see if it works. If not, they have a 30day money back no questions asked return policy which is pretty nice.

And I know we have been over this before :D but you are sure the power is clean and the cable is snug and all right?

The brain installed almost flawlessly for me on my truck's computer, which is now in my office. I also had to put [ClassInstall32] at the very end of the .inf file. The longest part was the download though (aside from gutting the truck).
So, yep power supplied is good to go.

so it works fine on your truckputer?


are you using it on a motherboard USB port?
