Oh that doesn't sound good at all. What options does this leave me with? Do you suspect it is a USB chipset issue, an issue with the USB drivers, or something on the Microchip side?

We have a known problem (with no known solution) with non Intel 82801 controllers and I have no idea why. The only computers I can get my hands on and the same with Tim all use the 82801 and work fine. All the computers at our universities and all of our personal computers use this chipset so it must be very popular and it works fine.

    What is your USB controller?

Do you get any message when you plug it in? Something like "Device malfunctioned" or "Unknown Device" or nothing at all?

I believe a balloon popped up from the taskbar that said "Unknown Device", but I'm not sure. That PC is in the tractor at the farm, so I'll check it out again tomorrow.

Is it an AMD or Intel?

I've gone through this a few rounds. With intel, i had the same problem, but I found that my power supply connection was weak, and when I made a permament connection to a good 12V p/s, I no longer had the unknown device entry, and it loaded the drivers properly. With AMD (which is not the case here) I have had no success no matter what I tried in the past, but with a new brain, I can even get AMD computers to work (allbeit only 1 brain at a time, currently).

Also, maybe try uninstalling all of your USB devices, even hidden ones. Then without the brain connected, allow them to reinstall. And then with a rediculously well contected and tested power supply connected to the brain, plug it in.

    Other thing to consider doing:

-Try a USB 2.0 PCI card if you have one.
    -(removed)
But seriously, The power supply thing was key for me.

This motherboard is powered my a M2-ATX power supply in a VoomPC-2 case. I doubt I can find a way to fit a PCI USB card in there. I'm also pretty sure I can't get a different PSU in there. Even if the FB works on a test bench while running on a regular PSU, that isn't going to fix my problem while it is in the vehicle.

I'll test it this afternoon with a new FB that has a new PIC. Maybe (I'm hoping) the new firmware is something this motherboard likes.

I don't think the firmware will fix it.

What's really, really weird is that h3rk has two identical (in design) Fusion Brains, and one recognizes while the other doesn't.

It's gotta be a variance in manufacturing (noise on USB bus, tolerance on the resistors in the USB signal path, etc).

Some aspect of most brains fall outside acceptable tolerances for non-Intel 80201 controllers, and they get tagged unknown devices. Nick and I only own motherboards with 80201 controllers. Hopefully this summer I will buy a non-80201 controller based board, and figure this out.

If I could get you remote access to this box for a day or two, would that do you any good?

Oh, and I would assume that there are other people that interface Microchip PICs to USB. Does that group have any ideas?
