Software Section of Website getting overhauled... Expect random 404s

For the next few days over the weekend I will be updating the site... (again)

I am streamlining the software downloads section. Below is an image of what it looks like now. There will be only links to the newest version. Even though I made the newest version ontop with the old section, people were downloading old outdated software for no reason and complaining when the new skin didnt work right for the old software. This will be no more. I am thinking of a download archive, but I am not sure I want to deal with the hassle of people downloading old things. If you feel you want an archive, speak up now or forever hold your peace.

I am also working on the skin and documentation/tutorial section.

After work tonight I will write the "Getting Started" tutorial which will basically cover what to do after downloading the installer.

Then I will be writing the help files for the configurator and then making various tutorials for them. Suggestions welcome as well as help from anyone willing to write manuals/tutorials/faqs/writeups/whatever. Lots of people have done their thing, and very few have shared how for others. Which is fine, but if you want to help out the community, it would be nice for a writeup or something detailing how you did it.

So while I am doing these updates, there may be random time-outs or errors throughout the site as I forget a closing double quote or php "}", so it is most likely my mucking about if the site is down. So if you need software and it is not working through that page, email us and we will send you a direct link.

I am not a FB owner and user (yet!) but plan to get one.

One thing issue I see with this "only new stuff" approach is that sometimes things are changed, features are introduced that break the way an individual has implemented the software before. So, if he updates and finds some features he hacked into his build broken it might be ugly to not be able to revert.

So I would say have a 3 version rotation system - offer the current version and the 2 previous ones. A new version replaces the oldest one. Add a big disclaimer that old versions are provided as is and no support or backwards compatibility (with skins etc.) is provided. Powerusers will be able to cope with that.

I like the 3 version system as suggested by Paracelsus. I am sure that if people need older versions than the latest 3, they can email you guys.

All the old version will still be on the server available to download. I figure if a user needs an old version and cant find it they will probably send an email, and then I can send them a link. I just dont want new people to be confused.

And version 2 and version 3 (current) are not compatible at all. I have been mentioning the phase-out of version 2 for about 8 months now, and the time is here. It is gone.

I agree powerusers can cope with that, but as we have found out during our short time in business, people buy what they dont understand sometimes and to say some of our customers were not powerusers would be the understatement of the millenia. (well maybe expcept this recent SD debacle)

Maybe I will bury the software archive in the FAQ section somewhere where people looking for it can find it, but people not looking for it wont ever find it...

And on that note, I have started the FAQ overhaul as well. I got some basic ones on there, and I will add as many as I can before I die. It is a long process, and it is hard to come up with questions to help people that dont know what you know if that makes sense. I am going off of the most asked emails currently. Then I will work on more tutorial based ones.

People must email you asking "What is the Fusion Brain?" a lot.

Well that was the first one I did and I copy/pasted my html code down the list and that is what popped up.

And this was more of a Dad suggestion. He visited over the 3day weekend and he says he showed the site to some people and they pretty much said "it looks really nice, but what the hell is it?".

    So for fatherly appeasing, voila.

Also here is a link to post a FAQ request: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/docu...-requests.html
