i have 3 push to make buttons,
i have connected each of the 3 buttons with one side connected to + and one side connected to AN
Can you sketch up the hardware side. How are the buttons wired, and how are they then connected to the FB?

sorry i do not quite understand that.
currently i have the top half of the daigram.
are you saying i should connect the [ - ] to the [ AN ] through a resistor? if so, what size resistor?
ps. why is it a bad idea?
Bad idea because you are leaving the AIN floating when it disconnects. When it floats, it slowly looses charge or keeps other AIN values' charge. You need a way to discharge it to ground.
Any resistor between like 1kohm and 100kohm is fine.
EDIT:
Think of it like this... The FB's analogue input channel is like a big bucket and holds charge with a small leak through the FB itself. You push the button, it charges the bucket for a little bit (like fills it up). Left by itself it slowly empties through the FB. But now you punch a huge hole in it. You push the button, and as long as it is pushed, the FB can read how much is going in. Release the button, the whole bucket gets dumped fast to ground.

ok, thanks. i'll go and pick up some 10k ohm resisters tomorrow from maplins.
next job, changing the volume using a potentiometer.
can we (you) control windows master volume yet?
done all my soldering. the digital switches now do not bleed into the next input.
thanks for your help so far ...
"can we (you) control windows master volume yet? "
i've searched through and although a few people have asked this question, it has never been answered.

that's ok.
i just didn't want to settle for winamp volume if master volume was available.
have you any tutorials or pointers for winamp volume. i don't seem to see a delta increment that we had in the pre-MDX version
