Fusion Brain CarPC LT1 dash gauges project

I have a copy of the evaluation version of EFILive on my laptop as a matter of fact. I disagree on the budget issue as it is $179US for a real license. It didn't display half of what I wanted for a virtual dash. It's been fun learning all this stuff. I just started last June.

Whilst there are systems out there that can read all that sort of data from certain ECUs through the OBD I socket, because OBD I isn't actually a standard system, the amount of data that can be read for each engine is specific. For my E30 BMW, I'm having to build my own datalogger, and using a Fusion Brain, a few potentiometers, and some cable splicers, I'm getting speed, tacho, fuel and coolant temp for a hell of a lot less than $179!

I have a few questions.

- when measuring voltage, how could we know the range? For example if measuring RPM or Speed?
- I've read a page back about using capacitors to remove noise, what values(farad,voltage) of capacitors do we choose? and should it be connected in series or parallel?
