(original buttons were carbon contacts on ribbon...) Here's a pic of half of it. My hands hurt.

I think you need more wires!

I suggest some sort of insulating goo (like hot glue) to cover all the exposed contacts once you are done. A few thousand miles with RoHs compliant solder will probably mean fragile or broken joints if that is the only thing holding it up. Prepare for the worst.

Oh, of course. That wasn't done, I had just burned my fingertips so much that I gave up for the night. It was also 3 am!
This is how the display side looks, individual heat shrink, supporting plastic sheet with hot glue

hmmm with this latest firmware i can no longer connect via VCP. In hyperterminal it tells me unable to connect to Com Port. Check Settings. Tried other programs and its the same thing. Any ideas? This is a win 7 64bit system. Latest FuseGuide still works. I've tried powering off.. redoing the firmware, pc reboot, and fiddling with the port settings.

I think that is something else going on. Perhaps the golden reboot? I think dscustoms and I can connect ok. If you had the COM port running/active when you switched into bootloader mode, windows doesn't like that and probably locked that port.

I didnt have any terminal programs running this morning doing the firmware update, and i've tried to change the com port number and its the same thing. I'll have to try on another PC i guess

And it is possible the flash went badly. So you may want to reflash it just incase.

I'm using win7 x64 as well, and have no issues with hyperterminal and either of my fb units with the latest (or any) firmware.

Something else i notice. after jumping the reset pins for a second these events do not happen

    • Once the device is attached and the drivers are functioning you should see it listed as a "Custom USB Device" in Device Manager
    • Open up the bootloader application
    • You should see it say "Connected"
On mine after resetting there are two sets of leds that dance around for about 5 seconds. Then one stops (if looking at the FB and the USB and power plug are on bottom, the 3rd one from the bottom stays solid green and the bottom two leds still continue to dance). Windows never goes to install the custom usb device. It looks as if it installs a usb input device, but its kinda hard to tell ... i have so many of them. If i open the bootloader, it says device attached, not connected.

    EDIT

Just checked.. in reset mode windows installs the FB as a HID-compliant device.
