Question Fusion Brain V3 and V4

I have both versions and I have tried searching for the issues here but was unsuccessful. I have programmed some code in VB and I am able to do everything that I need to do but I am dropping out my Fusion Brain when my air compressors kick on. I am thinking it is EMF noise killing them.

The issue is like I pulled the power supply from the Fusion Brain.

I am bench testing it so it is being run off of its own AC/DC power supply and the Compressors are running off of the trucks 12VDC power system. Totally isolated via relays. I am an electrical engineer and controls systems engineer and I design control systems for refineries and chemical plants for a major company. So I am a pretty smart guy when it comes to stuff like this, but this one is kicking my butt.

I also ran into the issue on some solenoids on the same 12VDC power supply. I assumed that they caused the voltage to drop below the threashold that the Fusion Brain needed to stay powered but rulled it out when I separated the power and ran across the same thing.

It causes my VB app to lock up until I cycle the power manually on the FB then it works fine again.

Hit me with any questions you need to know in order to figure this one out.

If your code leaves the file handle open and does not open/close it before/after every write/read operation, then anytime there is a glitch you are fubar'd. This is why I don't do that in the official software.

It sounds like you have isolated the issue to the power supply drooping. If so, then just change the jumper to power the brain from USB instead of the 12v.

It sounded like it was the power supply but it isn't. It is being powered from 2 different sources. And can you elaborate on leaving the file handle open? I execute a read/write every second to get the analog input updates. So I should close access to the .dll each time?

The V4 and V3 do not automatically share power supplies like the V6. If you have the jumpers set to wall power, it will ONLY use wall power. If you have it set to USB it will ONLY use USB. For debug, I recommend keeping it in USB. Move the two jumpers so that when you plug it in to a USB port, the LED lights up and it connects to the PC.

Not open/close the dll, but the file handle to the device. You say you wrote your own code so I have no idea what you are doing. But all devices in windows are written to via a virtual file pointer and if you leave this open all the time, if there is ever a communication problem, it will be mucked up and you can't get it back without disconnecting and reconnecting. If the goof up happens when the file pointer is closed, then it has no impact. Every second is ages in computer land, and if going that slowly you definitely want to be closing that file handle after each transaction.

I used the FBDemo FB_Connect() and FB_Disconnect() proceedures in my code. Should I run them every time I do a send/receive? Right now, it is only run at the form load time (as in the Demo). I do use the timer_tick to send and receive as well as on demand when a button is pressed on the form. There is also a keep alive bit that gets toggled on the FB_SendReceive.

Also, I have not been sucessfull in finding the pinout for the USB power on a version 3 board. I looked at the PDF on here and could not come up with a determination.

Yes, connect/reconnect every time. It takes no time (just opening and closing a file handle) and saves lots of hassle.

Version 3 has no USB power option. Version 4 has a jumper. Version 6 it is automatic.
