Belo, it's not free, but MP3car store has good prices. I'm not sure if they have GMPC in stock at the moment, but you may want to give them a try:

I bought the software and GPS 20x receiver at Fry's for $91.00.
I think a lot of people misunderstood my question. I was asking if it was better to buy with or without the GPS receiver since the software is less portable when purchased with the dongle (it is tied to the dongle).
I bought the version with the bundled GPS receiver. I figure I got a 1hz receiver for just $20, and I can transfer the software to any PC I want. I bought mine off Amazon.com.
I have the GPS receiver velcored to the interior of my dash (under the plastic) just above the main gauge console. I get at least 9 satellites and an accuracy of <50ft most of the time.
It's not exactly more versatile. You can only have a registered install on one machine w/ the software only version. If you wish to change, then you have to deregister. The bundled will allow you to install on any computer, as long as u use the supplied receiver. So there are trade-offs.
so does the 20x mean it actually refreshes 20x a second? i know most mapping software doesnt refresh that fast
No, the 20x is just a product name, just like for example BU-353 is a product name.
GPS20x is a Garmin's USB GPS receiver
GPS10x is a Garmin's Bluetooth GPS receiver
Both of the above refresh once per second.

so what software actually refreshes at 5hz? because i have a 5hz qstarz device but iguidance doesnt register any different... 1hz mode is really irritating to me honestly.
Garmin Mobile PC, the software-only version, does.
The Garmin Mobile PC versions that come bundled with GPS20x or GPS10x will only refresh at 1Hz, because that's how the included GPS units refresh.
However, if you buy just the GMPC software, and use it in conjunction of a GPS receiver that refreshes at a higher than 1Hz rate, than you will see smoother map movement. I've tested it with a 5Hz receiver.
