    Best way to buy GMPC

Hello, first post here. I'm a long-time software engineer and geek. I've been following the threads from the ride/roadrunner guys and tempgp for quite some time now. I'm stuck with Windows for the sake of being able to use Garmin navigation on my carpc project, so my question is...

Which way is the best way to buy the software: With or without their USB receiver? I know that the licensing is tied to the receiver when they are bought in a package... which would be a problem for me... unless there are issues I don't know about. I'd be just as happy buying a ~$40.00 SIRF GPS receiver and buying the software separately. Any merits or better/worse reception with the bundled package?

    Thanks for your help!

My old Garmin 18 gps has a 5Hz refresh rate, I've seen most aftermarket ones are 1Hz. Very precise.

Problem with my Garmin is the drivers: It can't resume from hibernate/stand by. I have to restart the computer for it to work (windows 7, xp worked fine).

Anybody experiencing this with the newer Garmin GPS 20?

Just tested, GMPC located the 20x (usb) receiver and found satellites in reasonable amount of time considering I was running it inside. Worked from sleep and hibernate on windows 7 pro 32-bit. Not sure about other receivers, but this one is accurate enough for my navigation purposes.

I bought a refurb. copy off of ebay. It comes with a GPS20x and a year warranty via Garmin. If you want to just get and play with the software for the cost of the hardware, this is one way to do it.

Penzance, what is the name of the ebay seller?

Just wondering... At what point in your post count does a mod not have to approve each post? I understand the reasoning behind it, but I'm a big fan of instant gratification, lol.

I got mine from DrivenGPS for 44.99. I used the bing cashback as well to rop it down a little further.

Any merits or better/worse reception with the bundled package?
    * The bundled GPS20x is just as sensitive as any modern GPS receiver
    * The GPS 20x is not weatherproof (as for example BU-353), so it cannot be easily placed on the roof for improved reception
    * The bundled package allows you to buy lifetime map update plan
    * The software-only version is not yet compatible with the lifetime map update, but it may be in the future
    * The GPS20x package allows users to buy other Garmin maps that are locked. They can be unlocked to the GPS20x

There may be other differences between the two versions that I have not listed. Many of us may not be affected by any of the above. I personally use the software-only version now, and I'm happy.
