Garmin PC and the never ending OSK

Garmin PC and the never ending OSK.

FYI, for anyone who has noticed how great the Windows 8.1 "Virtual Touch Keyboard Panel" is with Garmin PC, and I'm not talking about the normal Windows OSK here, which is small and lame in comparison. The Win 8 Virtual Touch Panel is normally only available when Windows detects a Touch Screen device, the advantage of this Panel is that, when it opens, it can resizes an App like Garmin PC, depending on how Garmin is running (position and size, etc), so that the two share the screen, Garmin above and Touch Keyboard Panel below, and it can restore Garmin back to normal size when it closes. It means that every screen in Garmin is fully visible and the combination looks like it's built into Garmin PC and not an add on OSK.

Only problem is, I wanted it to open when I press a Hardware button or a Button in the FE. Normally you have to swipe to get the charms bar and select the Key Panel from the Settings TAB, or have the Touch Key Panel ICON on the Taskbar (set it to start with Windows), but again you have to get to it, and that's a crude way to do it IMHO.

On various Win programming forums, most people claimed that it was not available unless a Touch Screen was detected (not true as you can use it with a mouse) and that it could only be launched via the Run command line - also not true.

Anyway, I got it working and it can be launched like any other app, Garmin is a joy to use with this Touch screen KB Panel and even more so in Portrait mode.

It made me realise once again how simple things are often overlooked, I wrote my own OSK years ago, mainly for Garmin and it was never implemented with resizing of Garmin in mind. So I just finished recoding that and along with having even more control over my inbuilt OSK, I made it auto resize and restore Garmin as it opens/closes, this allows almost a full keyboard on screen (only F keys are toggled) with large clear buttons, on Screens 8" and above its simply brilliant (as is the Win Touch keypad Panel) and as I'm running a 10.1" SP2 in Portrait mode, it has made me use Garmin PC once again.

    That's fantastic Mickz!

I traveled all day yesterday to 5 places across the province that I had to input an address for. Playing hide and seek with Garmin and the keyboard does work but you have to be really careful what you type or you end up doing it again.

I hope this is something you are willing and able to share.

PhilG that's one of the reasons I gave up on Garmin-PC as my main NAV app, (I can switch between Odyssey (built in OSK) and Garmin with the touch of a button) don't know why I never thought to resize Garmin PC when Virtual Key input is running.

For anyone using Win8, the "Virtual touch Key Panel" is easy to access, however I'm going to bite the bullet and extract my OSK from my FE code and finally make it stand alone, so hopefully in a week or so I'll have it ready for someone to try, won't be on the Home Programming PC until after the Easter break.

OK a few Quick Pics before I head out. NOTE - My FE is primarily controlled by my iDrive controller between the front seats. Pressing the GPS button on the controller brings up the GPS, Pressing the iDrive GPS button whilst the GPS is on screen opens and closes the OSK.

These are straight Full Screen captures and as I control everything with the iDrive, and some features via my Steering wheel buttons, I can devote the full screen to each function in the FE without wasting screen real-estate on navigation buttons, volume controls, mute function, Map zooming in/out, DAB station or Music track changing etc.

Happy Easter to all, hope those travelling stay safe.

How do you enable the keyboard? is there a button in your FE?

Is it possible to get the keyboard working on XP?

AFAIK the "Virtual Touch keyboard" is only available in Win8.

NOTE: Windows 8 also has a standard OSK as does Win 7 - can't remember if XP has one. Try typing "OSK" without quotes in the Run box.

NOTE: Windows 8 "Virtual Touch keyboard" has a different command to open it - OSK works but that opens a different Key Layout.

You can open an OSK with a application Button in an FE or by a Hardware button if the FE can be programmed to do so, or a third party app can be used to interface to a hardware button and launch the OSK - like Joycon.

In my FE the OSK is launched when ever I press my iDrive Hardware GPS button a second time - if its open then it closes it (Toggles the OSK.)
