Help needed - Ps2 remote and pc?

Hey people i have just got the infred kit i bought from my local electronics store (jaycar) working and i can get a playstation 2 remote cheap from my work. The question i wanted to ask you guys is how can i use a remote with my infred kit to control winamp mainly and windows. Can i use a ps2 one on my pc cause it has like a infred remoted and a little infred part which plugs into the ps2 console or do i need special software just to make it work. I can get the remote for like $10 here in aus and it has stacks of mad buttons on it and looks mad thats what has got me hooked on getting it lol. The only problem is that i have only used my infred for mobile phones and never for using a remote control plus i dont know if the ps2 one will work on a pc.

From what you have said, I would guess that the kit you are talking about is just the transmitter/reciever module that plugs into the mobo. this can only be used for comunicating with mobiles, and printers, so, the answer to whatever your question is, is no..

get a proper infra red receiver and you can use the remote. Sounds like what you have is an IrDA dongle for data communication, which is not compatible with standared Ir.

Not true. I have seen several IR remote emulation programs that allow a PC to act like a TV remote, and I'm sure allow reading of remotes for programming. I know there is a WinCE version called SkyCommander, but I don't remember where I found the PC version.

Ahhh... SkyCommander. How I miss having my Jornada 320. It was great fun. I used to go to this pub near my house and mess with the big screen. Once I turned it on to Martha Stewert Living on a dare durring a Rams playoff game. Never seen so many angry drunk people in one area in my whole life.

If the infred kit i built works with the mobile then it has to tarnsmit and recieve a singal so i couldnt see why not it wouldnt work with another remote. What program can i use to say use a normal tv remote on my pc. Does anyone else think the ps2 remote will work with a similar program.

I've also seen SkyCommander, but from what I remember from the documentation, it only works with some of the older WinCE systems. My new Jornada won't support it. I haven't seen a x86 version either. I believe that you'll have a problem getting it to work with irda ports because of the required range. Cut & Paste from irda.org:

Range: Continuous operation from contact to at least 1 meter (typically 2 meters can be reached). A low power [Pocket PC] version relaxes the range objective for operation from contact through at least 20 cm between low power devices and 30 cm between low power and standard power devices.

On top of this, irda is exponetially faster than IR remotes, so you would have to ensure you could programatically slow down the controller. IR transmitters do exist, but most are stand alone boxes that you can control with rs232. I'd look up one, but I can't reach Google on base right now. You might also want to talk to the people at evation.com (makers of IRMan) because they've been working on one for quite a while now.

An IR receiver, which will allow you to use a normal remote with your PC, is easy to find and get software for. Search for IRMan and you'll find more info than you know what to do with.
