    Post Tinytrak information ( add lojack to ur car)

    Since i get people asking me about this all the time in email and in posts i will put all the info in 1 post.

    You can make a very simple lojack device for your car or whatever... by hooking up a cellphone to the tinytrak. Which in turn is connected to the GPS receiver.
    Then from home PC you call your cellphone in the car, and you get the location plotted in your computer.

    Of course if you got a ham radio license you can do this using a transceiver but since I don't have one and don't plan on getting a license nor do i wanna add a 3 feet antenna on my car...

    tinytrak anmd GPS hookup(www.byonics.com): At home you hook up your telephone's speaker speaker audio output to the soundcard line-in or mic-in. Use software called AGW that interfaces with your soundcard and forwards the packets received from your tinytrak to WinAPRS which will decode the packets and plot your location on a map.

    here is link for AGW: http://www.raag.org/sv2agw/index.html

    and for winAPRS: http://aprs.rutgers.edu/WAPRSdoc.htm

    I also know that you can hook up your gps receiver with some kind of y serial port cable to both your computer and also to the tinytrak. Both can use the GPS receiver without interfering with each other.

    If you gonna get a gps reciever i recommend the randmcnally one. Here's why:

    - can be used with copilot2001 (best gps app out there for in car navigation)
    - can be used with tinytrack without any modifications.
    - both the gps receiver and tinytrak uses 5V.

    phew...I think this is one of the longest posts I have put on this forum hehe

    There should be a program, should your computer get stolen and it's on a different network or is dialing up when you didn't have a moedem in there, that it sends you an email with an IP address or something. Just an idea.

    Well, if all you want traceable is your PC, then CompuTrace might be your answer; However, if someone pulls the PC out of the car, you've still lost contact with the vehicle... I *do* like the lojack idea, considering the cost comparison.

    let me try.....
    requirements:

    1- you have to call the cellphone in the car from your home or wherever...and the phone speaker should be somehow connected to the line in on your sound card.
    2- you setup agwpe to the soundcard you are using. This program will "decode" the sound packets received and translate em i guess...
    3- you use winaprs to plot the data received on a map.

    SImple... =)

    Crazyshaxs,

    you need a computer and sound card equiped with line in at home not in the car. In the car the GPS receiver's serial data output is connected to Tinytrack and Tinytrack's output to a cell phone (through a hands free harness). In the car your computer setup has nothing to do (you don't even need to have one). All this can easily fit in a small box hidden somewhere in the car (make sure GPS has a good reception though) with it's own secret power supply line and (optionally) a small back up battery.
    You can trace your car on a map all over the globe with +/-15m accuracy and (at least everywhere you have GPS reception and cell coverage)!!!
    It's also almost free.

    The problem with GPS is if the car is driven into a building, usually where chop shops are, then it becomes useless.
    I found this alternative in the September Performance Auto & Sound: The Boomerang It uses the cellular phone network so it would work in places without line of site. It costs around $400 CDN and then $10 a month for tracking, but they have a guarentee along with insurance benfits. I want one if I'm gonna invest how much I think I will in my next car. Thoughts?

    Hmm I don't know I saw tiny track website and informamtion but seemd to me it's not realistic to me.

    1) most people usually don't leave their phone in the car.

    2) You have to put your phone to auto answer but ppl don't really use this option for daily use cellphone.

    even if you happen to have your phone in auto answer and connected to computer in the car when the car got carjack, chance is you probably leave your phone in obvious area where it can be easily seen, such as near by shift gear or console box.

    usually theifs search the car first, and if they see the cellphone , they probably unhook it from computer.
    Or even if they don't find it first place, when you call your cell phone, it will ring at lease one time even if it's on auto answer mode(most phone) , it will get the thift attention.

    Unless you have 2nd cellphone just for this and hide nicely in the car , it might work but otherwise it's unrealistic idea to me.

    I think this is a nice toy but not for a lojack device.
