Help with 44pin to 40pin HD adaptor

I bought this adaptor to use with my laptop harddrive.
My only problem is how do i figure out what way it goes ?
This thing can plug in right side up and up side down.

thank you for any light shed on this

On the 44 pin female they should be labeled (i.e. Pin1 and Pin44). HDD are typically labeled on the under side of the drive as well.

I can't be much more detailed as I dont have a laptop HDD at hand.

I will see if I have one in my shop to look at tomorrow.

Pin 1 is opposite from the power pins (41-44).

    Thanks guys --
Yea, my HD has a "1" on one side (nothing on the other)
It also agree's with DIGItonium's reply about the 1 being opposite the power.
I didnt even notice that -
