    Please Help

    Hey guys,

I have a M1-ATX psu, a toshiba 40GB hdd and a via C3 800MHz carpc. This has worked well for just under a year. Recently it started to fail when booting. It said that there was no hdd present.

So I took the hdd out and plugged it into my pc, nothing happened so off I went and bought a new hdd. I did the re-install on the new hdd using an AC powersupply so I could do it indoors. The install went fine and everything was good.

When I plugged it bk into my car the carpc failed to boot about 60% of the time. Most of the time it failed because it couldn't detect a hdd a couple of times nothing appeared on the screen. And now it wont boot at all.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?
I cant decide if its anoth faulty hdd (2 in a row is quite unlikely)?
A dodgey power supply breaking the hdds?
    Or a dodgey Mobo.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I'd look to the MOBO now. It might be going bad.

    I don't see a PSU "breaking" a hard drive.

since this does not happen all the time my guess is that you might have power issues. the m1 might have lost part of its efficiency, and lowered the maximum wattage/voltage it can provide.. (that might burn HDDs I think) or it might be giving more than 5v or 12v to components..but again that would be harmful to the Mobo aswell..
i 'd say check your voltages first.
    R u using a 2.5 hdd or 3.5?

I'm using a 2.5 Hdd. The only reason I suggested that the PSU might be damaging my Hdd is because it all worked fine using an AC power supply. Then when I plugged it into my car (using the DC-DC) thats when things started going wrong, although that may well be a coincidence.

Perhaps something else I should mention is that the M1 ATX is also powering my lilliput touchscreen and this stays powered fine. Although this uses GND and +12v and the Hdd uses GND and +5v. I will go and check the voltages and let you know. Thanks for your help!

Ok I have just checked the voltages on the M1 ATX with both the engine running and not runing. The 12v is about 11.98 in both cases and the 5v is 4.023v in both cases. Looks like We may have found the problem! As for the Hdd dieing I guess thats because they are drawing too much current to compensate for the lack of voltage.

I might start another thread to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with the M1 ATX's.

I'm gunna try and work out what part of the PSU is broken. Thanks again!
