m/b stuffed? psu starts up automatically

    Hi all,

just picked up a 2nd hand motherboard and cpu..
the power supply starts up when just the constant power and ground are good (accessories is at 0v). This is on my opus 150W psu. so i took it inside and to connect it up to my normal psu...same thing..

nothing starts on when trying to start the thing..no cpu fan running etc.
i quickly looked with a multimeter, one of the pins from the ATX connector on the motherboard is giving out 6 volts (i assume this should be 5).

its a blue wire (that connects to it)..located at position

on this diagram..its either pin 9 (or 19).

    any help is appreciated.

What do you mean "the power supply starts up"? Do you mean the motherboard starts the boot process?

If that's the case, you should go into the BIOS setup and see if there is an option to startup after power failure or something. Some BIOSes will have that feature, and if it's enabled, it would explain the off behavior.
I think the Opus would also have to be set into dumb mode for this, but I'mnot 100% certain on that.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

when i mean the power supply starts up, the fan starts spinning.

i cant actually boot up the computer to get into bios mode.
should there be power coming out of those ATX pins (from the motherboard) do you know?

have you tried to replace the small cmos battery on the MB? if it was left sitting around for a while, it could have died and that could be your problem...just a though...

i found a replacement on ebay...50 aussi dollars..and its in melbourne...are you the seller? selling broken junk on ebay?...lol...j/k

    http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-NetVista-831...QQcmdZViewItem

im looking for other ways...but you proabbly have to replace the mobo...

i know its not a RAM issue because you cant even get it to post (if it was a RAM issue, it would post then restart or just plain crap out on you).

The CPU is probably not the issue because your mobo should tell you..

im looking for other alternatives that are less than $50AU...

edit: i couldnt find anything cheaper than that. if you buy new, it will be at least $100 before shipping to Australia.
do you know anyone on a US military base by chance? if you do, you could ask them to have something mailed to them and you just pay them....avoiding all customs costs...

i just wanted confirmation before i went back to him and demanded a swap (for that other one) or my money back

if i cant get this to work im thinking of just paying a crap load for a mini itx case + m/b + cpu mailed to aust from mp3car.com...its annoying cos i want to use my pci sound card..

thnx for ur help though really appreciate it mate

    no problem m8.

i asked this last time, but do you know anyone on a US military base there in Australia? cause they could help you out...or even i could if people dont ship to APO/FPO addresses. When i was in the Middle East, i never had to pay customs as long as i had it shipped to my work on the base. so all i had to do was pay for the product and shipping (like i was inside the US).

if you know someone, i could ship it to them, or you could buy it and have it shipped to them and you could avoid all customs fees and save a ****load of money
