    Xbox 360 Car PC

I am thinking of building an in car PC for myself

I was wondering if it had been done before with an Xbox360? I don't just mean putting a 360 in a car, but actually installing XP or Media Center on it?

As the Xbox has a P4 3ghz CPU and 512mb RAM it would be suitable, just not sure on the power side?

Let me know if anybody, and pics if poss?

    Cheers

So, are you suggesting using the Xbox360 as your carputer? I don't know the answer to your question, but have you ever seen a 360 used as a computer? If so, post pics or links here, that would make it easier for someone to answer your question. Otherwise someone might just shoot back a "NO, can't be done". My first concern, site unseen, would be the power consumption. The 360 is a hot and hungry beast. I'd check the specs on mine, but had to ship in back for the "Red Ring of Death" issue. Good luck, and if you ever get it installed make sure to post pictures!

For 1, getting XP on a 360 is impossible, It is locked down and very complicated to hack.

    2. the power Requirement is also very high requiring about 185 watts (http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-2.htm)
A mini ITX board requires about 20 watts just to give you an idea.

So really a 360 is not a very practical idea.

I know this is my first post, but i thought I would make it meaningful.

you can't install windows on an xbox360. Check xbox-scene.com if you want more info. You can do a lot more with one of the old xbox's so you may want to look into that. A lot cheaper too.

you cant really put anything yet on a 360, like has been said its not been fully hacked yet

so, no, a 360 is pointless as it is right now

The 110db whine from a 360 would probably sound really cool in a car....like a F16 or something.

Plus, 360's are known for overheating in someone's living room. What do you think they're gonna do in a trunk?

So I think we have all proven that it is not advisable nor feasible to use a 360 as a carputer, but for the sake of argument (and seeing as this is GKRAMER's first and only post) is it even possible to use a 360 as a computer? I know I've seen done and done myself many things that others have said are impossible, and I'm not even that good at this stuff.

Anyone know of anyone out there who has attempted or gotten close? I would assume you "could" gut the 360, and depending upon how proprietary the components are, swap in a more friendly motherboard and use the 360's case? Again, why would you want to? I guess just to say that you can and did.

    Thanks for the input guys

The 360 runs in between 180 watts and seams to max at 200, so I think like turner brown suggested a DSATX (although not cheap). I think that I will be runing the DSATX from 1 Farrad power cap if that would help things?

The next issue to consider is cooling and noise, so I would change the internal fans for quiter more efficent fans help the issue. And obviously make sure that it is not in an enclosed space.

I have seen on an Xbox 360 website that somebody has put Ubunutu (Linux) and then Qemu (Virtual Machine Emulator) and finally Windows XP on it, so somebody has already got Win XP on a 360. Actually does anybody know of a GUI that work on Ubunutu?

I won't think about the rest untill I have got XP on 360 before thinking about install.
