Thread: Networking across USB port

I have thought about this too... I was originally thinking of using a USB to Ethernet adapter to network my car PC to my home PC, but after I saw a few companies at comdex, I realized USB was the way to go because:

- 100 Meter USB is now possible.
- The next level of USB, expected to be out next year sometime, will run at 400mbps which is way faster than even 100-base-T networking hardware today.


Plus I like the cool connectors USB has, and that there is high-current +5V available from the same cable!

Not to burst your bubble, but USB networking has FAR higher CPU usage than Ethernet networking. That may be something to consider depending on how you plan on using it. If it's just to transfer songs "offline" then it's no big deal, but for playing over a network, it may be an issue

Transferring files "offline" requires much more bandwidth than playing network games. All games do is send information packets back and forth about player position, etc, to keep everyone in sync.

Yes, this is just a matter of convenience and speed for transferring MP3s and other files to and from the car PC. I'm glad to not have to install an ethernet card if I can use hardware I already have.

The only downside is that USB for Linux isn't very stable yet... hopefully soon there will be stable drivers for Linux.

Oops, I took "playing over a network" as "playing network games"... my mistake, sorry!
