Alarm/Remote Start - $549 for hardware an overkill?

I only found one real thread with recommendations, but most were just referring to DEI (which is about 80% of the market right?).

The thread was also encouraging the OP to do it himself.

    Goal:
1/2 mile remote start, with indication that it started. So I don't have to wonder if it started or not. Basic alarm function, the car won't get stolen, and in most cases I'm not going to run out of class, and across campus to check to see if someone is breaking into my car, or if no one is around and some student accidentally brushed into it with their backpack.

    Suggested Hardware:
    Python 990

Has 1 mile range with indication, and great (more than enough) alarm features. It only comes with one remote which seems to be a risk to me. I like having a spare key and access to the car, just in case I lose my keys somehow. So to replace that, will actually be roughly another $100, so total should be $649.

The installer will charge $100, so upwards of $749 (with two remotes), otherwise $649 installed.

Is this an overkill for what I'm wanting? Seems drastically high, but then again, I dont' know much about these things. I read where Red recommended avoiding cheap systems, or you will pay for it later.

    Appreciate the advice!

Well I have the Audiovox unit and no regrets, so cheap is not always bad.

However what I have wont do what you want. I know how to get the infinate range for alarms and starting, but I am not sure about the confirmation. I suppose you will need a 2-way paging system...

Also 1mile... Yeah right. Maybe in a flat field with line of sight, but a dinky keychain wont get a mile all the time. Maybe with a new battery a cold day and no hills, but otherwise, I dont think so. Usually if I can see my car, I can get it to start. So from 1 building that I can "see" my car (maybe other cars in the way, but I can see where it is parked no buildings in the way), I just push the remote start button 3 times and pretty much everytime it is started.

If you are interested in the big range (not sure about the confirmation though), Audiovox has the CarLink products that actually uses a telephone and satellite. So anywhere in North America that your car can see the sky (or you at least get a cell/gps signal) and you have a phone (cell probably), you can dial into your car, enter your pin number and select the code through an automated number.

I thought I read about a 2way pager somwhere, but I think I was mistaken.

I actually only need roughly 1/4 mile at any given time, which I imagine the 1 mile performing as (like you said, laughable that they advertise 1 mile).

The two places I park the most are both in parking garages, so the car won't have line of site. Even when I go out to eat or a movie, half the time I'm in a garage (semi city life).

I did read extensively on the CarLink stuff, and it seemed nice, but I didn't think of the sky view (same as my temporary gps device which doesn't work in garages).

yeah a parking garage will disable the CarLink.

Its good that you dont expect a mile range! Anywho, I still think $750 is too expensive for something this simple.

Do you get a cell signal in the places you park? You may want to look into using the cell phone as the receiver. If you have a phone add it to your plan and then you can call your car and it can do whatever and send you back a message on success failure. More complicated though, but doable and I think even on the boards.

I will see if I can dig up some better prices for systems for you.

Well that was a quick google and ebay lookup. I think Viper is regarded as a good brand. I personally have never used any of there products though.

You might be able to find a better and cheaper one with more searching and patience with ebay. (auciton instead of BIN).
