I agree with the prementioned route of using biometric door locks or safes as the easiest and most secure route. Simply because computers break, don't boot, or any other of a thousand things that can screw you over if you want to start your car. But as always to each their own, for example one of the members on this site has two lcds as their gauges powered through windows and it looks amazing but if the computer went kaput, there goes all the ways of getting critical information to the driver. Sorry officer my computer didn't load so how could I know I was going 70

If anybody wants examples of locks, look here

If you're good with an Atmel or PIC microcontroller, you can use a slide-based fingerprint reader from SparkFun Electronics. That way it's completely embedded and not dependent on a PC (and can even turn the PC on). It's also cheaper than the deadbolt option. Details on the fingerprint reader: SEN-08881, http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/pro...oducts_id=8881.

Shame they're out of stock, I'd get one of those in a heartbeat, it'd go good with the uC I am putting in my car.

RevFE - Super fast, modular frontend. Most powerful skinning engine in existence. Strong enough for an i7 made for a fitpc.
Just a shame I can't justify a carpc to use it on anymore.

might have already been mentioned but I didn't read all the posts,

Could you not simply connect a relay to the remote central locking, so when you unlock the car the relay powers on the carputer circuit, once you have power you figure out a way to send an on command to the PC.

Cant you turn on the PC without using the ignition? I know the carnetix can use pulse start. So you can unlock the doors and have that signal be the pulse start on your computer. This way the computer will be off when the car is off and the computer will be on before you get into the car.

I am thinking that the steering lock COULD be eliminated, HOWEVER read below

I once lost my keys out of my grand prix (2003) so i had to hotwire it, i still had the key remote so i got in the car, one of the steps in the hotwire process was using a screwdriver (flathead" to break the locking pin in the steering wheel, PLEASE REMEMBER this will permanently stop the lock wheel function, and some people may not want to do this) but once i got my dash down i got my wires and had my car started and driving in 10 minutes, no steering lock, just adding that in!

I'm also looking into starting car via fingerprint my approach is separate from the real PC.

I have a Sheeva Plug which is a computer the size of a wall wart power supply. It draws just over 4 watts which allows me to run it off of my 80 AH battery for 240 hours or 10 days. I will definitely start my car at some point within 10 days, so battery drain will be nowhere near a problem. So I intend to keep this thing on at all times ready to catch the fingerprint.
