    Question ELM327 v1.2 - Anyone tried it?

I bought my elm scan tool last year. It looks like there has been a recent upgrade to the ELM327 chip. Reading the website http://www.elmelectronics.com/connect.html#ELM327 there have been some speed improvements. One being the adaptive timing, so it's not waiting for responses when it doesn't have to. Two being it now supports serial baud rates up to 500kbps!

My current elmscan tool is v1.1 which doesn't have these features. But it would only be $40 to upgrade to the ELM327 v1.2 IC chip by buying the IC from elm electronics, as opposed to a couple hundred to buy a faster non-elm scan tool.

Has anyone tried the v1.2? Is it much more usable with these features enabled?

Is the $40 for you to send them your ELM323 OBD converter and they send you the unpdated ELM327? Or do you pay $40 for just the ELM327 chip? My understanding is that they will just send you the chip. If that is true, then you will NOT be able to just unplug the ELM323 and plug in the ELM327. The circuit is comletely different and will NOT work. You will need to redesign the circuit.

I am doing my Senior Design project using the ELM327 (at least I've started the research).

I have an Elmscan 5 which uses the ELM327 IC chip, not the ELM323. The IC version is 1.1 verified by sending it the AT I command.

What I would do is just buy an ELM327 IC chip from elmelectronics for $32 + $8 shipping, they would send me an ELM327 v1.2 chip and I would swap it into my elmscan. I've already opened up my Elmscan and seen that the ELM327 chip in there is socketed, so it would be a piece of cake to replace.

BTW, what is your design project? Sounds interesting if it's using an ELM327

I know it's been a while, but if you just want to update the version, look at the schematics of each version if you can. That will tell you if they are interchangable. Best thing would be to contact ELM about what differences there are in the versions.

My project is just a PC-based OBD-II diagnostic tool. Trouble codes, real time data, etc.

So, I went ahead and bought the ELM327 v1.2 and as I expected it was 100% compatible with my existing v1.1. Straight swap. The IC is even in a socket on the PCB so it was ultra easy to swap out.

The results were not very exciting though. During my short 5 minute test with no tweaking I did not notice any speed increase on my 2006 Corolla using ProScan 5. I think this may partially be due to the fact that ProScan 5 is old and probably doesn't make use of the new features on the ELM327 v1.2. The two features I was interested in (as mentioned in original post) were adaptive timing and increased baud rate.

The adaptive timing is supposed to be turned on by default so I was expecting to see an increase due to that, but I could not verify its operation within ProScan. I could not try out the increased baud rate because ProScan did not support it. I was connected at a fixed 34800 baud rate.

I tried PCMSCAN which is newer and better, but I couldn't get it to retrieve any data. I had never used PCMSCAN before and I only attempted it for about 3 minutes and then gave up.

I think I'll have to make a program sometime to test it out and compare performance between having those features enabled and having them turned off.
