    Audio question

I'm planning on building a completely custom car computer and I was wondering how I could get a VERY HIGH quality audio output. I'm not sure what kind of voltage and power is required for this, and I'd like a cheap way to reach that audio quality. What do you guys suggest?

Is a simple computer audio output enough to drive 4 speakers and a sub amp? Or do I need to pre-amp the signal? If so, what kind of amps should I use to get a near flat curve?

    sound card

i would suggest that you get a 5.1 channel sound card. I would use PCI if you have one availiable. If not get a usb sound card. Use 1/8 mini to rca jacks to get to a 4 channel amp for your speakers and a mono amp for your subs.

However, I wouldnt be able to control fade and balance right?
Also, why do you suggest 5.1? How is that better than 2.1?

These statements don't really go together, depending on what you call "very high quality audio output".......

Mainly because you can have better immaging in the speakers from front to back antdthe cost is about the same. The 5.1 audio channel will have 6 1/8 jacks and will allow you to expand later if you want. And also you can use balance and fade like you could with a normal cd player. With some of the new sound cards you have complete control over every speaker in the car in volume control. (FL, FR, RL, RR, SUB)

Well you could go digital out, and run a standanlone DAC + analog preamp, but that's not exactly a cheap option (I just sold a dac for $200, and my preamp for $500).

Is a simple computer audio output enough to drive 4 speakers and a sub amp?
With a 5.1 soudncard you will have individual controll over your 4 speakers + sub. With a 2 channel you will loose all controll except left/right balance.

I actually thought about having a digital output and making a board with a 24 bit DAC + amp... If I make it myself, I dont think it would be really expensive. The question is... will I get much better audio quality?

I have a similar setup that you are going for. I bought a Kicker SX700.4, which is a 24 bit digital amp, it makes a big difference in your sound. You might want to also consider to upgrade your speakers; you will not hear much of a difference if they are stock.

The Kicker SX700.4 is WAY too expensive!
