    www.ftdichip.com
    http://www.gigatechnology.com/usbio.html

the 2 companys make usb boards that can be used for various things like serial interface and junk the ftdi chip actually gives you the schematics to make the boards or you can order a kit from them i did not get into the prices yet but for usb to serial and maybe other projects that could be useful to someone on here <maybe usb interface to shutdown controller ?>

Not sure if its worth building your own, as they are readily available on Ebay for around $10. I paid $15 including shipping for a cable. It has a nice little box half-way down the cord that contains the circuit, easily modifiable. The board in the box is easily less than 1" x 1" x 2". It can hide almost anywhere. I want to combine it into the same enclosure as my GPS receiver, effectively making a USB GPS receiver.

I'm going to be using one with my MP3Car player which is running on a BookPC (no serial ports). It controls the GPS receiver... Works great.

    See ya!

By the way, the one I got off of EBay is based on the FTDI Chip. (That's who made the drivers, and the main chip on the circuit board.)

The one I got is exactly like the following:

This is the company that I bought mine from also... Very smooth transaction.
